We saw the Hungarian National Ballet perform Onegin here and the theatre was so beautiful it reminded me very much of the opera house in Prague. The day prior to the performance we toured the theatre and learned of its history. During a performance, or at least the ballet, the bar is set up badly, whereas there is no flow through and even if you go straight there, unless you are like the 10th person in line you will not get a beverage before it is time to go back in the theatre for Act 2.

“Beautiful building”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 16, 2013

It is smaller than I would have expected, but the inside is amazing with marble all around. The outside has two sphinx-like sculptures that don't really fit, but the artist who did the composer scuptures told them if they did not take the sphinxes, they would not get the other scuptures! Hard bargaining! Fun to see.

“Amazing building with interesting history”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 15, 2013

Was lucky enough to visit the Vienna opera house earlier in the same trip. I am not a fan of Opera, but am a fan of spectacular, historic, preserved buildings - especially those with such a great story as the Budapest Opera Theatre

“A real little gem of a theatre”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 9, 2013

Booked tickets online for the Operetta a couple of months before our trip and paid £6 for two tickets! Wow....our seats were on the side balcony with a great view. Although in Hungarian, subtitles were available & we thoroughly enjoyed the Operetta. This is a beautiful place to visit and we highly recommend!

“Budapest Operetta Theatre”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 7, 2013

I’m very lucky, as my cousin is Hungarian and lives in Budapest, so I was able to see and do a lot on my recent trip that most North Americans would have some trouble arranging. Seeing a production of Marica grófnő at the Budapesti Operettszínház was one example.

Attending this operetta [written by Emmerich Kálmán] at the Operetta House was a truly joyful evening! My cousin was able to buy box seats for our entire group of six family members. What a fantastic experience! Not only were the seats wonderful, we were treated to a fancy snack and glasses of champagne in a private reception room during the intermission. The tickets for the performance [including the snack at intermission] cost a total of 6,000 forints each, or about $26.00 US/Canadian. This was truly a real deal...box seats, champagne at intermission, food at intermission, a personal escort to the private reception room!

Although the whole operetta was sung and acted in Hungarian, it was pretty easy for all of us non-Hungarians to follow the plot. The costumes, singing, acting and stage sets were wonderful. The Operetta House was magnificent. Although not as opulent as the Hungarian State Opera House, this building was still a gem. It was quite a cultural revelation to clap along with the audience in European style as the actors/singers came out for bows after each scene.

I’d highly recommend this operetta production. It was uplifting, well done, and the Budapesti Operettszínház is worth seeing on the inside!
