“Lovely Square in the City Center”
Reviewed June 26, 2014

This Square comes between the 2 main Pedestrian Streets in the Budapest City Center; Vaci and Deak Ferenc; it is a traditional small square with a small garden and nice statues; you can easily relax in the garden or move around to shop or enjoy a great meal at one of the most famous restaurants in Budapest.

The Deak Ferenc Street is a miniature Pedestrian Andrassy Avenue full of nice adjacent shops; that you can visit away from the cars and parking hassle; it’s not as long as Vaci Street, but with the branch streets you can enjoy window shopping and buying from high quality stores that you don’t find in Vaci Street and are much more easily accessible than Andrassy Avenue shops.

“Nice city plaza area with a few interesting things to see.”
Reviewed March 29, 2014

Vörösmarty Square (Vörösmarty Ter) is a nice public space in the city centre of Budapest found at the start of the popular pedestrian street, Vaci utca. The square is named after Hungarian poet and dramatist, Mihály Vörösmarty (1800-1855).

Here you can find quite a few restaurants such as the historic cafe, Gerbeaud, and Onyx, one of Budapest's two Michelin starred restaurants. There are some fashion shops in this plaza as well.

An interesting statue found at the square is the large statue named after Vörösmarty and its worth having a look at the Vörösmarty Metro Station found here. This is a small but quaint station with nice Art Nouveau era tiling and decor.

Overall, we enjoyed spending a bit of time at Vörösmarty Square. It was nicer place to stroll leisure and we quite enjoyed a meal at Onyx found on the square.

Hint: Those interested in a more green (public) space, might prefer nearby Elisabeth Ter instead, just 2-3 minutes walk from Vörösmarty Ter.

“Xmas Market - At least its Hungarian TAT and not Chinese!”
Reviewed December 23, 2013

We love Budapest but this was our first visit to the Christmas markets. We visited 15th to 19th December and found the city centre and the markets to be fairly quiet. They got busier in the evening of course but even then we had no real trouble walking around. I enjoyed the atmosphere. The hot wine and punch was certainly better than the stuff you get in some other European Xmas markets. I tried some of the hot food sold by the Xmas market vendors and it was very good. I thought the hot cabbage roll dish was excellent.
What we did find was that moving out of the city to some of the Xmas markets in the outer districts brought its rewards in respect of reduced prices. There was a smashing xmas market in the grounds of the Hungarian National Museum (Calv Terr) and the handicraft prices were 50% cheaper than the xmas market in Vorosmarty Square. This market also had some bric and brac stalls selling 2nd hand items including jewellery and ornaments.
The secret was price what you like at the Xmas market in Vorsmarty Square and then visit the outer Xmas district markets and but it there at a cheaper price.
