We visited just after the opening time (10am), the ticket purchase area was very busy. Be very sure you know how much it’s going to cost you (HUF 4500/£12.5/€15) per head. You then go through an airport style security check, again busy and queing, You then shuffle in the crowd through a single door into the main room whilst coping with similar amount of people trying to exit through same door. Once inside you wait in the seating designated by your country flag for a guide to show up. Our guide while a very pleasant woman had a very small voice and no presentation skills. Her words were lost in the general background noise of the crowds. Then we go back through the door to outside where we do three more presentations at various places, combating the crowds at all times. The site is spectacular inside and there are interesting and moving things outside. My view is, it’s very expensive and poorly organised, you may well have a better experience if you find a time of day to visit when the crowds are less.

We had been here not even 5 minutes when a very rude lady asked us to leave because my skirt was too short. It was very short but I WAS WEARING PANTS UNDER IT. Absolutely ridiculous. I’m Jewish and I have for sure been to synagogue wearing less, in Jerusalem wearing less and to other holy sites wearing less. It was so ridiculous to was actually pretty humorous. Skip this place, it’s pretty unimpressive, even if you don’t get kicked out.

We took the English tour which I would highly recommend. I’ve visited a lot of synagogues around the world. This one has a very interesting history and is quite ornate. We thoroughly enjoyed visiting it.

This building and the architecture were incredibly beautiful. I have never seen a synagogue this big. The detail of the everything, the tiles, the walls, the railings...everything is just amazing. The guides are very knowledgeable and you can get the tour in many different languages. This truly tells a story of old Budapest. Worth the visit.

The entry cost is not cheap around 4000 huf. but the guides are really knowledgeable and there are tours in most major languages.
We had some time to kill on a rainy day and really enjoyed our visit. You get to see the impressive synagogue, inside and out, the holocaust memorials and cemetery and there is also a museum.
It can get busy but we went around 4pm and it was fine.May not suit small children but anyone from age11 upwards will find the history of interest.
