“History is ever-present in this grand structure!”
Reviewed January 22, 2013

As Americans, we have heard of the systematic way in which the Nazi persecution of the Jews resulted in the decimation of the Jewish populations throughout Europe. Visiting the Great Synagogue in Budapest and listening to the guides tell the story of what has taken place, we could feel that for Hungarian Jews, the Holocaust was not so long ago.

Awe-inspiring would be a good word to describe the experience of visiting this monumental beautiful edifice and hearing the story of its creation and subsequent history. And of course visiting the Garden of Remembrance and the various other Holocaust memorials is devastating. But they are beautiful as well!

“Jewish History”
Reviewed January 21, 2013

The synagogue is the second largest in the world (2nd to Temple Emmanuel in NYC). Its outside is typical of a synagogue, but its inside is more churchlike than most, including a large organ. There are good, multi-lingual tours available that are quite reasonable and informative. There is a small museum attached that is worthwhile seeing and the small adjoining cemetary that was the burial ground for thousands of jews murdered in Budapest under the Nazi regime is emotionally jarring.

I haven't been to a Synagogue before but this one is impressive. Ask for a guided tour (worths the money) and hear usefull info for the whole Jewish complex.
At the end we had the luck to follow another guided tour on the Jewish museum, by a fine gentleman who survived the holocaust. Unique experience to shake this man's hand

“Piece of history”
Reviewed January 18, 2013

When in Budapest, don't miss seeing this spectacular synagogue! So much history, some good some bad but a must see when in town. We took a guided tour and our tour director made the place come alive for us. She even pointed out her father's name on the wall of rememberance in the garden area. The museum was well worth visiting too. It reminded us of all the beautiful parts of Judiasm - the rituals, the ancient torahs, the artifacts - along with the terrible history of the Jews in Budapest during the Holocaust. We walked in the Jewish quarter afterwards and could imagine how it was back in the more peaceful times before WWII.

“amazing”

This Synagogue is huge and has 3 levels which I have never seen before. The environment was wonderful and it would be something to attend a service there. The exterior was also very moving with the Holocaust memorials to remind us of those who perished so tragically as a result of brutal persecution
