“Great singing and good value”
Reviewed April 17, 2014

I try to take my wife to the opera for her birthday. This year we tried Budapest and went to see the 'Marriage of Figaro'. The singing and music were first class. As a added bonus, the cast threw flowers to the audience and I was lucky enough to catch some for my wife.

“Beautiful building, excellent performance”
Reviewed April 17, 2014

We were staying very nearby so we went to see a ballet (Romeo & Juliet) at the Opera House. The building is beautiful inside and out, with wonderful ceiling decoration, and the auditorium is magnificent.
Due to short notice we were only able to book seats at the back of the stalls for quite reasonable prices. The seats were fine, if a little hard, with good leg room, but the rows weren't very well staggered and the floor rake was very gradual so you could easily end up sitting directly behind someone tall who could ruin your view. Boxes looked much better but bear in mind they have rear seats which are on the same level as the front ones so again you may not see much unless you're prepared to stand through the whole show. Basically, go on the website and look at the seat prices, they will tell you everything about the quality of that seat - as far as I could tell there are no "bargain" seats here.
At the interval we were able to buy drinks from one of the four bars in the upstairs room and then walk out onto the balcony overlooking Andrassy Ut.
The ballet itself was excellent in every way.
If you're not visiting to see a show, you will need to book a tour to see most of the building because casual visitors can only see the main foyer, but I thoroughly recommend even doing just that if you're anywhere nearby, it really is a marvellous building.

“Supping at The Opera House..”
Reviewed April 15, 2014

How can one miss the Opera House...? There are two alternatives ..One is to take a guided tour which happens once or twice a day or better still book a performance and please 'dress' for the occasion..
This elegant and stately lady deserves no less than you return the compliment of her elegance and utterly stunning decor...
In the summer during the interval , a glass of champagne on the terrace overlooking the grand Andrassy Street is a memorable moment..
There is a Metro station No.1 ''Opera' or a casual walk past elegant shops and restaurants can too be a pleasure....Before, if you have time ,a cocktail at the 'Callas' bar next door is a good beginning..
I had the good fortune to be a guest in the box overlooking the stage and sneaked in quite illegally a bottle of champagne and glasses which added to the thrill..but box, stall, balcony or 'Gods'...Take in this experience..

“Great music”
Reviewed April 15, 2014

Great musical and creative experience. Unfortunately, the opera was in Italian with running titles in Hungarian, so there was no English translation
