The museum inside the Buda Castle is easily skippable, and you can be excised if you do not include it in your Budapest itinerary. You cannot be excused, however, if you do not visit this place at night to see the spectacular views of the city down below from probably the best lit castle / palace anywhere.

Although the exterior and courtyards are incredibly impressive, the museum we entered - the Budapest History Museum - was very disappointing. No castle interior on view, no great historic narrative to read and only a handful of castle furnishings in view. Other than that, it was shards of pottery and broken frieze. Perhaps the art museum on the property would have been the better call.

We entered the castle from the gardens. They were small but gorgeous and had no crowds. Spent a good 20 mins just sitting there in the beautifully landscaped place. Then went upto the castle using the elevator. There was no need at all for the funicular. Why spend 1800 huf on the funicular when you can just as easily enter through the gardens and use the escalator+elevator combination?

Anyways, the castle exterior was alright. Too filled with tourists. We didn't take a guided tour so perhaps hence, we didn't find it remarkable.

What we enjoyed though was the art museum inside the castle. We spent 2-3 hours in the permanent collection of the museum. Superb collection of art from Hungarian artists. Entry fee was 2800 HUF per person but totally worth it.

Of course this is a must visit, combined with the Fisherman's Bastion. But, we found it difficult to get oriented to where the castle really is. It seems like the castle buildings themselves have been turned into an art museum which unfortunately we didn't have time to visit.
