We got up and out of the hotel early (7:30am), walked across the bridge, and took the funicular up to Castle Hill. We used Rick Steves self-guided walking tour and enjoyed learning about the sights and the history of the castle and the surrounding areas. We were the only tourists on Castle Hill for the first few hours, then around 10:30-11:00am swarms of tour buses and tour groups started to arrive...which was perfect because we were just finishing our sight-seeing up there. If you go early, you will be the only people on Castle Hill and can enjoy the magic of the place and be done just as all the other tourists arrive! Also, there are many nice coffee shops up there as well as public restrooms that you can use for a small fee.
