This was hands down my favourite place to visit. It was stunning to look at from down below on the banks of the Danube and even more stunning once we had climbed to the top.
You don't need to take the funicular if you don't want to. The walk up is pretty easy and that's coming from an asthma sufferer

The city looks amazing, difficult to walk all the way I hope but we took Segway.

It's on buda side, a must do.

The castle is now museums. On a visit to one of them I could see no evidence of its former glory. I was subsequently told that there has been major damage in WW2. The restoration was only of the exterior.

The buildings on the hill are different from those on the Pest side. There are great views across the river from various spots. You can walk up either quite steeply or more gently. There is a funicular to the castle and at least one company which operates electric shuttle buses which do a circuit.

The funicular was out of action when we visited so we got on the electric hop on and off bus. It's 1 euro more than a return funicular but has the advantage of not having to walk back to funicular from the north side of the castle hill complex. The views are amazing as is the architecture.

If you're in Budapest, stay on the Buda side and take a trip up to the old district and see Castle Hill. Great place to wander around a explore. It is especially beautiful at night when it is all lit up.

You can walk, but unless you are young and fit take one of the many tours to Buda offered either from downtown or the base of the hill. At the top there is a short walk through the old town, past some gift shops to the cathedral which is worth a visit (extra cost) and the to the walls offering a fantastic view of the Danube below and across to the town of Pest.
Depending on the tour you will have an hour or more to walk around and see the sights. That is about all you will need.

We recently spent two glorious nights at this hotel. Beautiful rooms with magnificent views. The food was excellent and the staff friendly. The staff gave great recommendations for eating on both sides of the river. We were right next to the church which is a must to visit. It was an easy walk to the Pest side of the city. Do not forget to walk to the Pest side to see “The Shoes”. Very sobering.

Crossed over to the Buda side by the Chain bridge. Climbed up to Castle Hill at Fisherman's Bastion. Went into Mathias Church, walked around the old town, then the palace area. Lots to see. saw Sandor Palace, the National Gallery and the History Museum. Walked back down to the square. Beautiful at night from Pest, all lit up. Amazing views of the Danube and Pest.

Very impressive area, this definitely had an impact. Fantastic at night lit up, you can appreciate the grandeur of the time when it was built
