This hotel is an absolute dump, and needs some serious modernisation. Save your money and go else where
We booked with Thompson holidays for a midweek break (they acted as an agent for Jet2), so slept here for 4 nights. We were sold this hotel as we were told it was near the centre of Budapest, and the rooms were modern and clean like a travel inn type accommodation. We were horrified to see what we got. Its more 1970's nightmare than modern and clean. Its 40 mins walk from Budapest centre, and by metro about 10 mins, after a five min walk to the metro.
When we booked with Thompson we were told a standard room was what we needed it had air con, mini fridge, shower, and would be a very modern room. When we arrived at room 209, which turned out to be in the old communist part of the hotel, we were horrified to see the state of the room, the stained carpets, the curtains 5 inches to short, no air con, the 70s style bathroom, no shower, a hole in the sink and a cracked toilet.
The bathroom consisted of a 1/2 size bath tub, which you could only stand in and a hand held shower hose from the tap, as a woman is was very difficult to wash my hair, and with the un-waterproof shower curtain everywhere got soaked. I was staying as a city break with my friend who is also a woman, and we both struggled with the tiny inappropriate bathroom facilties , when you washed in the sink the water ran though the hole.
On our very arrival we complained about the room and was told basically tough its what you paid for, we tried to explain what we thought we were getting and what we had received and was told tough and the hotel voucher Thompson had supplied us with waved in front of our face. The receptions ignorant staff did tell us the other rooms called superior rooms were better but we hadn't paid for one, and then walked off. Absolutely appauling behaviour.
The hotel also acts as a conference centre so was full of business men all day and night, so timing for breakfast was key, and we were warned this by a member of the staff.
The hotel claims to have 2 bars, um not really they have a wooden summer house type bar which they didn't open apart from a few hours around tea time. in the small outside terrace. there is also a small lobby bar which has one bar staff member and no drinks, they walked off everytime you ordered something leave you standing there and then return a few mins later with your drink, so service is beyond slow, as you can imagine there was a lot of business men and a lot of fed up people queuing, hence we only went a few times then gave up.
The over all standard of public areas is ok, the lobby was clean unlike the rooms, but as soon as you go into any area with carpet they are heavily stained and sticky this hotel is more 1 star than 3.
Breakfast was continental and well stocked we always arrived at 930am as advised as prior to this it was busy with all the business men before the conferences started, so when we arrived the tables and floor were filthy so the poor staff were running around trying to clean one for you.
The position of this hotel is near hero square, but this closes at about 6 then its a ghost town, so you have to either walk for a good ten mins to find a local bar, or head into the centre, please note metro stops at 11pm, so do many public transport services and we were warned to avoid taxi as they are expensive, so we did a lot of walking in an evening, but did find a lovely local bar which made us feel very welcome, and we went there for two of our nights.
Overall this hotel was miss sold to us, apparently the superior rooms are better, but as we never saw one I cant comment, but the old communist rooms are hideous, and we nick named ours strangeways wing (which is a Manchester prison) as you enter the corridor it looks like a prison wing, and when you go in to the room it is a prison cell.
With the fact the curtains were too short for the window by 5 inches we had zero privacy when the light was on, so in an evening we had to undress in the dark or in the tiny bathroom if dry.
all in all save your money Budapest is a lovely place for a visit, but this hotel is not in a good position, is a dump, and the staff are quiet ignorant I too saw other peoples reviews I suspect they were in the superior rooms as no one could compliment the standard, maybe its because I see travel inn as standard and my expectations may have been set too high, but ive also stayed in £20 B&B in Blackpool which are better than this place and far cleaner.
