“Great location”
Reviewed June 7, 2005

The location is perfect. Although the room could use some updating, the location is so wonderful who cares. Walk right out of the hotel and you are downtown in the pedestrian zone and only a couple of blocks from the Danube. The breakfast was fine.

We spent three nights at the Hotel Taverna, and we found this hotel to be located in an excellent, central position on a pedestrian shopping street in downtown Budapest. There are plenty of shopping and eating establishments, literally outside the hotel front door. Check out the large market place at the opposite end of the Vaci Street from the Taverna for wonderful local dishes and great souvenirs. There is a tourist office downstairs outside the hotel lobby, with very courteous English-speaking agents.
The room was very clean and smoke-free, and we certainly appreciated the effort to provide us a special room, complete with an air purifier for our asthmatic condition. It was well-appointed and spacious, although the mattresses are quite firm. The bathroom was smallish, but with adequate hot water and kept nice and clean. The noise factor was a bit of a problem, however. You could easily here the neighbors slamming doors, drawers, etc., but I would say this probably was due to unusually loud people, rather than thin walls.
The buffet breakfast was really outstanding, with a wide variety for any taste. Everything was fresh as well. They had a non-smoking dining room that was totally separate - rare in Europe.
You cannot go wrong with the Hotel Taverna - super value for Budapest.

I have just returned from a stay in beautiful Budapest. Hotel Taverna is very central and ideally situated for eating out, shopping and sight seeing. However, it is more of a three star hotel than a four star. Rooms average but clean. Lack of personal toiletries, just one awful shower gel/soap/shampoo in bottle and allow yourself at least half an hour to dry your hair with the hotel hairdryer. If you are unlucky, you can get very thin towels. But, on the whole, staff very helpful and there is a sumptuous breakfast. Cheaper to book on the Internet than to get a rate at the hotel. During our stay in Budapest we did an overnight stay in Vienna and had to pay a far higher rate for the 2 nights at the Taverna not booked via the web. But staff were very obliging and we were able to store our suitcases in a locked room for the one night we did not stay at the hotel. There is a sauna and cold tub with towels available. I would say there are better hotels around if you don't mind staying a little bit outside the central area and using the Metro which is cheap, efficient and safe. I do feel we paid for location rather than standard of hotel.

Just got back from 3 great nights in the Taverna Hotel. The location couldn't be better. It's right on Vaci Utca which is the main drag through Budapest and runs parrallel to the River Danube. The main sites are mostly just a few minutes walk away. Our rooms were small but clean and comfortable. The staff were friendly and polite. The food was excellent. We ate in both the Brasserie and Gambrinus restaurant in the hotel and both were excellent and good value, the Gambrinus being slightly more swanky with domes over your main course which were lifted with a flourish. Breakfast was also excellent, there was fresh fruit and salads, cereal, bread, pastries, hot bacon, sausage and eggs. The lobby bar is expensive compared to other local bars but they will serve you all night if you want. We enjoyed the Hungarian brandy! The cake shop on the ground floor is also very good.

If you go out of the front door and turn right, walk along Vaci Utca to the corner, there is a nice bar called Anna's where we had excellent salads and sandwiches, nice local beer called Dreher and coffee. Also on Vaci Utca we found an excellent restaurant called Central Cellar. It down a spiral staircase which opens out into a beautiful place with a huge vaulted ceiling. The food and wine here are fantastic.

Everywhere we went the standard of service was excellent. Everybody spoke excellent English.

We visited the Parliment building which was an incredible piece of arcitecture. We don't do culture very much, but we did visit the museum of ethnography which was interesting with a great exhibition of old photographs. The views from Gellert Hill across the river are fantastic, even in the rain! The central market is huge but the shopping there and in Budapest as a whole wasn't that great.

One word of advice, don't take travellers cheques. There are loads of places to change money, almost every currency you can think of, but only a few will change travellers cheques and they give a really poor exchange rate compared to cash.

Stayed in this hotel last weekend for three nights and for location you could not be more central. Staff are friendly and very helpful, breakfasts are a great selection of hot and cold food. Lobby bar good albeit a bit more costly than the street bars. The bowling bar is a real hoot for an hour or so before you go out, but be sure to book it with reception in advance.
Rooms were very comfortable and clean. My party of 16 people were over there to celebrate my 40th birthday and all said it was a lovely relaxed place to stay.
We had to check out at 5.00am on the Monday and the hotel even laid on a breakfast box for each of us to take-away containing sandwiches, cakes, fruit, and fruitjuice.
I would definitely stay here again if I were to return to this fine city, and I shall be writing to the hotel directly to say so.

We have just come back from an Easter weekend in Budapest and for once I managed to pick a hotel in a great location and a reasonable price for a 4* hotel.

It is the only hotel on this pedestrian shopping street and you can literally walk to everywhere. The trams and buses are only minutes away and it is only a short stroll to the Danube river.

The service was excellent, as was the room facilities. As an added Easter touch they put a chocolate bunny on our pillows that night. The hot/cold breakfast buffet was brilliant and they somehow managed to separate the smokers from the non-smoking area. A brilliant cafe on the street level that served any sort of coffee or cakes that you could imagine.

We ate in the restaurant on the reception level as they had an Easter buffet promotion and it was a little over priced for the spread they had on but other than that no complaints what so ever.
