“Excellent hotel and location”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 19, 2009

We stayed here 2 nights for free (as a result of participating in a Holiday Inn group promotion earlier in the year) and although the reception staff were aware of this, the service throughout was immaculate. We were personally shown to the room - including a tour of the spa as we wanted to swim.

We were upgraded to a superior room with a river view that was brilliant -superb views over to the Castle Hill, Royal Palace and Chain Bridge, especially at night. Although not a huge room it was very comfortable and cosy, with nice lighting and well sound proofed and comfy bed.

Our visit was for a pre-Christmas weekend, touring the city and seeing the nearby Christmas market. The hotel location was perfect for this, with the riverside No. 2 Tram stop right by the hotel, the nearest metro within 5 minutes walk, but in any case all the key sights within easy walking distance.

We visited the spa that was very good - the pool perhaps slightly on the cool side (it kept between 26-28C) and a very nice sauna - the steam room could get very hot. We also visited one of the hot spas for a very memorable time, also good for getting to meet local people.

Budapest is a beautiful city - a little more expensive than other central and eastern European cities we've visited, and mostly very friendly. The hotel breakfast sounded quite expensive if you paid for it separately so probably best to book it through a package with the room.

The hotel briefings warn you about a scam where women come up to you pretending to be lost, ask if you have a map, then ask if you want to go for a drink with them and if you do you could be charged a fortune (100s of Euros) for a couple of drinks. Two girls approached us exactly as the hotel guide had warned, and so we knew what was coming and politely declined!

All in all a perfect base for a city break visit.

We have travelled frequently to Budapest and can easily state that the Intercontinental surpasses any of the other 5 star properties in town for a few very simple reasons- views of the rooms to the Castle district are exceptional, interiors and room organizations provide quiet elegant comfort, staff is heads above the rest in terms of assistance-professionalism & friendliness, best concierge service from Vienna to Athens and an excellent room service menu as well as for the restaurants and bar. Lastly, the newly renovated business lounge is exceptional with the price/value formula for an upgrade almost a mandatory favorable decision!

I booked in Intercontinental three times in the last 2 months. Twice we spent the night in a standard room, last time in a suite. The most important: always try to book with view to the Danube, it's fantastic and worth for...As a Privilege Club member I wanted to try the value of my club-card - and deemed it absolutely OK.
The rooms were - even the standards - spacious enough, clean and nice, with safe, minibar, slippers and many small things. (Good new to the guests from UK: yes, there i s a tea-coffee machine in the rooms, and as we know, this is the first question in reviews from an Englishman.:)) We didn't use it, but good to know.)))
To sit in your room at the - almost french, big - window at night and watch the river and the Palace on the opposite side: a real panoramic view. Relax-time, as one wishes it.
The bed are comfortable, with two pillows...and the rooms are extremely quiet. The sound-proofing really good inside, from the floor and other rooms, but perfect from outside. And it's important. You are in the middle of the town, big traffic - and no any noise you can hear. Liked it.
The bathroom is a bit small, but adequate.
The staff is really effective. The check-in and check-out is one of the fastest I've ever seen, was prepared...about one, one and half minute.
In the second room the A/C didn't work properly, we called the reception, went to the bar to drink a mojito...and 25 minutes later, when going back to the room, the A/C worked. The staff-members are always polite and except few of them friendly. Professionals. And not only at the reception, but in the restaurant, the bar - or the door-service.
The buffet breakfast is a little pricey, but finally worth for it, wide range and selection of meals, always refilled at once. (Don't drink the drink called "coffee" at breakfast /maybe this is a joke.../: go to the bar after, and drink an espresso or a cappuccino. Perfect.)
Clear 5 stars, out of question. And the location - close to everything - is unbeatable.
What I didn't like anyway: a little bit more fantasy with the furnitures would be not bad, especially about the bar /now it's a neutral business-style.../, or more greens in the room. But that's all.
The result: I've ordered my new card to the next year. The Intercontinental is an absolutely good, well-managed 5 stars hotel.

Your comments are much appreciated and will continue to be the motivating factor to all our employees. I will also share your feedback about the quality of coffee, which served for breakfast, with our Restaurant Manager and ask him to look more closely into this matter.

After reading numerous reviews, having decided to splash out a little extra for a five star in Budapest, myself and a friend plumped for the Intercontinental as opposed to a couple of others like the Corinthia Grand. The price compared to five star hotel prices in England was obviously a bargain, but many other similarly rated hotels in Budapest were available for the same sort of price. As others have stated, this is centrally located for sightseeing, being literally yards away from the Chain Bridge. In terms of bars and restaurants, it's realistically a 20 minute walk away from the main 'nightlife' area, but this will suit some as the area around the hotel is pretty quiet - certainly during the night. You'll find the nightlife area past the Basilica further up the Bajscy-Zsilinszky Ut (one of the main roads through Budapest). On the positive side I found the lounge and bar areas spacious, comfortable and relaxing and prices were not too outrageous considering the hotel and location - I remember paying about £5 GBP for a latte and a slice of Dobos. Beer is about £5 GBP per half litre. The staff were excellent without exception and spoke good English. The door staff are very attentive and even the hotel's own taxi service isn't prohibitively expensive (believe it or not we were travelling on a budget!). The only disappointment was the room. I've had bigger rooms staying at a Premier Inn and expected a bit more to be honest. The bathroom was also 'compact' and furnishings were basic - although I have to say, the bed was extremely comfortable. You'll pay a premium for a room with a view of the Danube and the Royal Palace which is directly opposite on the other side of the river - if a view is important to you then make sure you pay it because on the opposite side of the hotel you've got no view of anything other than the office type building ten metres away on the other side of the narrow road! Unfortunately I can't comment on their breakfast as several Palinkas and a 4am 'turning in' time does not lend itself to responding to a wake up call. I would say, however, that the English 'John Bull pub' just a few metres from the hotel's side entrance on the other side of the road does an excellent all day breakfast and adds a split cut Hungarian sausage for an interesting twist on the traditional English fayre. Overall, whilst it felt like a five-star hotel and the service was such, the room and the view made me regret not booking the Corinthia Grand, which is where I'll be choosing if I visit Budapest again, which I intend to as it's a wonderful place.

Dear glockdanny:
I am delighted to hear that you found the service in our hotel to be extremely satisfying and up to your expectations. I also read carefully your comments about the room furnishing and size. We just underwent a complete renovation of all rooms in order to bring a fresher and more modern look to the hotel. I am dissapointed to hear that you did not feel the impact of this renovation. On the other side, should you feel open to experiencing the same great service in the hotel, I will gladly offer a different room type to you which you may find more suitable for your needs.
Best regards,
Milos Cerovic

Location of hotel is fantastic,on river-walk along "Pest" side of Danube. Right next to Chain Bridge & facing "Buda" side of Danube looking directly at Royal Palace etc. Especialy beautiful at night when bridges & palace are illuminated.Paying extra for room w/ view and breakfast ( quite a spread)are worth it.. Room somewhat small but you do not mind as much when looking at view. Two women traveling alone, walked every where & felt completely safe at all times. Entire staff is very helpful, especially Tomas/ front desk & Anna/concierge. Service is prompt & efficent. Hint...do try a cup of hot chocolate while in Budapest. Is very, very special.

The hotel location is fantastic right next to chain bridge and facing the castle. The room we had had a view of the castle which was fantastic at night when it was all lit up.

The staff could not be more helpful, and were very pleasent and all spoke english very well.

The bar was quite well priced too.

The but comes in because I booked the spa about 2 months ago for the day of my birthday when I arrived they said no booking had been made. I was very disappointed.

Overall I enjoyed my stay, especially the bottle of wine from the manager for my birthday.I would go again, actually very soon and hopefully will get my spa treatment without any hassle
