The hotel is very centrally located on the river Danube. I paid 79.00 euros for River View room which was a good deal but the hotel is really not a five star quality. The view from the room of the Castle dustrict and the river is amazing but the room is just nothing special and not very clean. The bathroom is really small and not so luxurious. le Meridien and Sofitel are far better options.

We spent 4 nights at the Intercontinental over New Year 2005/6.
Overall we were very impressed-the rooms are lovely really big and the bathroom is very modern and well equipped (we particularly liked the speakers meaning you could still listen to the TV in there!)
We were on a room only basis for 80 euro which we found to be much better than paying 120 for B&B-there are plenty of places to get a great breakfast for next to nothing.

The concierge desk was extremely helpful, they helped us arrange dinner reservations at some fantastic restaurants.

The leisure facilities were dissapointing for a 5 star hotel, there is a small pool, gym and sauna but I would generally expect there to be more in a hotel of this standard.

We didn't eat in the hotel restaurant at all so cannot comment on that but unfortunately I became very well aquainted with room service when my boyfriend came down with food poisoning on our second night. The food is ok, not really worth the money considering what you can get elsewhere in the city, although I guess you wouldn't really be using room service anyway unless you were desperate!

All in all, the hotel is great for location (although not if you are looking for nightlife) was fantastic value for the advanced internet rate we got but from what I have heard, there are better hotels in the city..

I'll try to be simple as ever:

OUTSTANDING location
helpful staff
clean ok sized rooms
breathtaking view
average breakfast
TOO SMALL bathrooms
a bit boring
far away from 5 stars hotel
but recommended if online booking (cant get better!)

To put things in perspective I have to mention that prior to coming to Intercontinental I had just spent a fantastic weekend at the Four Seasons. Therefore checking in to Intercontinental was a major change of scene. Location is good, views are very nice of the river but this is first and foremost an American chain hotel. For business it is very efficient - for leisure I'd recommend Le Meridien or if you want the best the Four Seasons.

Due to Ambassador Status I got upgraded to the club level - hard to say if the rooms are any better - clean but boring. The Club lounge has an amazing view of the river and features drinks + refreshments during the day.

We have just returned from Budapest after a 4 nights stay in the InterContinental Budapest. The hotel is absolutely beautiful and it certainly has the BEST position and views in the town. Rooms are very nice with twice a day cleaning service. Breakfast is excellent and delicious with a vast variety of choices. People are friendly and willing to help you and also the security measurements are very very good.
A hotel that personally think so, that you should choose for your stay in Picturesque Budapest

"Absolutely magnificent!"
Date: January 2, 2006

We have just returned from a 5 nights at the Intercontinental . We stayed on the 6 floor , in a king bed room with the Danube river view , and what a view!!!
We paid 150 euro per night.Pay the extra money for the rooms with the view , it worth the money.
The breakfast is very good, the rooms are very nice and quite large and the service is very good.
The location of the hotel is the best in the city, much better that of the Meridien or the Kempinsky ,and at the Pest side , near all attractions.
Overall I would say this is probably one of the best hotel we have ever stayed and with the best views.

We stayed at the Budapest Intercontinental for New Year 2005/2006.
Hotel:
First of all, the location is perfect. Right at the danube, next to famous chain bridge and you can reach any sight of the city by foot. Especially the Vaci Utca (Street) pedestrian zone and if you just walk across the bridge you are in the castle district.
Rooms:
We paid 35 Euros extra to get an upgrade to a river room view. You absolutely should do this, because then you enjoy stunning views to the lighted castle and river danube. Make sure that you get a room on a high floor, because a tram is passing by the hotel and is quite noisy.
Rooms are nice but on the small side, expecially the bathrooms.
Service:
Breakfast is average, on January 1 they moved breakfast to the ballroom and all dishes (eggs, bacon, etc) were cold. Sparkling wine is not available, which is standard at most 5 star hotels.
On a rainy morning we wanted to have a walk and asked for umbrellas, although early morning they told us no more umbrellas available !
The Concierge told us there will be no fireworks for new year which actually was wrong - there was a huge firework by the city and we got information on tthat outside the hotel - so we could find a great place to see it - but the Concierge was useless !
Overall:
A nice hotel, great location with service to be improved, especially at the concierge desk, in the breakfast room and in the bar (as in most eastern european hotels !) Stay there if you get a good discounted rate (we got the room for 120 Euro per night), its not worth the regular price of more than 300 Euros.
