InterContinental Budapest

Reviewed March 9, 2012

We just returned from a family vacation in Budapest. The interContinental Hotel has an excellent location. We upgraded one of our rooms and had the best view. We faced the Danube and at night the Chain Bridge and buildings on the other side of the river were lit up. During the day we could see both The citadel to the south and Margaret Island to the north. The lobby is very nice. Only negative was the wait staff in the bar - they had a bd attitude. Not very helpful and slow. The acted like we were an imposition and we had no special requests or special orders. Even with that I would stay there again.

Dear SBenson,
Thank you very much for posting a review about your stay with us. We are glad to read that you liked the hotel and you left Budapest with pleasant memories.
Thank you for letting us know about your disappointing experience in our bar. I certainly apologize for the inconveniences you experienced and let me assure you that this is not our usual level of service. I do hope that you will allow us another opportunity to show you the famous "InterContinental" service that you expected from us.
With best regards,

On my arrival I was welcomed and accompanied to the reception, where a friendly front-desk employee took care of me swiftly and efficiently. At check-in I was proposed an upgrade to a room with view on the river for a moderate extra charge. I ended up staying at the 8th floor and I was happy I took the offer since the large window opened on a postcard-like view of the city. The room was nice and the king size bed very comfortable. The bathroom was a bit small but well equipped. Breakfast buffet (included in my package) was very rich and well presented. I enjoyed this hotel and I will certainly come back, at those conditions it was very good value for money.

Room Tip: Rooms with river view are well worth the extra charge

We've been staying at this hotel literally for decades. Once the king of Budapest Hotels, it has acquired an incredible amount of high end competition, in particular the Four Seasons on the same square, though the latter is unbelievably pricey. Within easy walking distance are the Sofitel, Marriot, Kempinski, Meridien etc. as well. Still, it is right on the Danbube, next to the Chain Bridge, relatively quiet and the view of the Danube if you get a river facing room is breathtaking. Worth spending the extra bucks for club privileges - you could eat quite well just staying in the club during breakfast and dinner times. In the winter it is usually quiet in the club, and the staff are highly competent and charming. The lobby can be crowded when a large group is present (we were there when a group of 500 came and went) but otherwise the hotel overall is a great place to be placed. Built by the Austrians as part of the Forum Chain, it was refurbished as the Intercontinental - it does not have the history or the charm of the Four Seasons, but unlike the latter it is quite reasonably priced. Get a one or three day pass at the Deak Square Metro station a few blocks away, and you can take the tram right outside the Intercontinental for a great ride along the Danube, walk to the subway at Vorosmarty Square or the Metro at Deak Square. You can also walk out of the hotel and across the Chain Bridge to Buda and take the funicular up the hill to the Castle, Halaszbastya, etc. The hotel is simply in a great location.

Room Tip: Paying for the club, though not cheap (40 Euros per day), gets you a lot of high quality food, and f...

I stayed here for business in November 2011. My business trip ended on the Thursday and I was extending for leisure for a couple of days. For that personal stay, I was planning to move to a cheaper hotel but decided to stay. Even though I normally travel on a budget as a tourist, the service, facilities, breakfast and everything else about this hotel was so great that I felt it was worth paying extra. It indeed offers everything a 4-star hotel promises. The staff are so friendly and warm and helpful. The breakfast is fabulous...so many hot and cold choices! There was even Japanese food! It was close to bus, tram and metro stops...it is in a highly convenient location. And a few blocks' walk takes you to some good restaurants. And of course, it fronts the river so the views of the bridges and Buda side, at the breakfast room are amazing. The only thing that can be improved was that the concierge desk was almost always empty or there was just one person there, so to ask a question, you had to wait quite a bit. All in all, I felt so relaxed and taken cared of during my stay here. If I ever get the chance to go to Budapest again, this hotel will definitely be my choice.

We had an excellent 4 day stay at the Intercontinental Budapest. The staff were extremely professional, friendly and helpful and the location is outstanding. We had upgraded to a River view room with Club Lounge access and this was more than worth the extra money.
The weather while we where in Budapest was very cold and we had quite heavy snow on 2 of the days, and therefore the location of the hotel and the ability to use the club lounge really came into their own. It allowed us to get out and about and visit all of the wonderful sights while always being able to pop back to warm up, grab a hot drink and a snack before setting off out again. The view from both the room and the lounge is amazing. We also used the pool which was a tad cold!

Room Tip: If budget allows use the Club Lounge

Just returned from 4 nights here and what can I say the Hotel was excellent. The staff were very helpful and friendly and the facilities were excellent. We stayed in a city view room. We could have upgraded to a river view for an extra 25E per night but didn't feel it was necessary and the room we had was lovely and quite roomy. We had use of the club lounge which was fantastic. The staff in there were brilliant, very helpful and the choice of food and drink throughout the day was very good. Used the swimming pool while we were there and it was very nice. Overall a brilliant stay. Would return as Budapest is a lovely city and would definitely stay here again.

If I had one word to describe the three day experience, it would be exactly that - Fantastic!

The location is superb. Just in front of the Chain Bridge, it puts you in walking distance of the center of Pest and Buda hills, and the public transportation in walking distance will take you anywhere in the city.

It is a nice conversion from a communist-era hotel, with spacious and generous areas.
The spa, with free swimming pool and sauna delivers its promises.

We got a room on the top floor, overlooking the Danube and the Castle Hill on Buda side of town.Very spacious, with a nice king sized bed, and excellent linen.
As an added bonus, the 1.85 m couch is positioned in a way that wants you to stay in your room, given the breathtaking view.
The downside - a small bathroom, but with prime amenities.

All the staff were very nice, and a special recognition to the Concierges. They will really help you with anything.

Breakfast area on the ground floor is quite spacious, and the buffet breakfast was of good quality.
However, there were a few negative points - mainly the freshness of the fruit, as they were using quite a lot of canned fruits, including pineapple and peach.

We had access to the Club Lounge, which is located on the first floor with a prime view of the Danube.
The food offered is of good quality, and although the setting and quality of the facilities are better than IC Vienna, the food offering is better in the Austrian InterContinental.
Free high-speed (speedtest quoted an excess of 30Mbps) in the lounge.

Otherwise, the regular rates for high-speed and low-speed (a capped connection to 128 kbps) apply - which personally think that they are outrageous.

Nonetheless, the staff will make you feel warm and welcome.
I will definitely recommend this property.
