“Tips on Budapest”
Reviewed October 9, 2007

The hotel staff was very friendly and the service was excellent. The location is very good, close to the Metro and fronts the Danube on the Buda side. Our room was very nice and the property is upscale in every regard. The only negative is the breakfast, which is expensive by Budapest standards, 12 Euros, and not up to the other standards of the hotel. Budapest is an incredibly beautiful city, but be forewarned there are several pitfalls which can cause you a lot of problems! Please learn from my mistakes!!!

Taxis- When you arrive at the airport, take a ZONE Cab. They are just outside the exit terminal. Get a card so you can call them later! They have fixed rates and you won't get victimized. NEVER EVER hail a cab on the street or have your hotel arrange a cab for you. My cab ride cost 4,600 from the airport, 6,500 when the hotel called for a cab. Do the math. Always call yourself if you need a cab, or make sure that you specifically tell the hotel staff that you hold them responsible for getting a cab that charges a fair rate. Be assertive on this point!

The Metro- Please learn from our expensive encounter! As a tourist on the Metro you are a 100% target for this corrupt system.
DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES attempt to travel the system by buying tickets in the metro. They have Controllers at every entrance to every stop to literally hold you ransom, it cost us, a party of four 80 Euros or we were going to jail! There is no way you won't get victimized if you try and buy tickets for your destination. The whole system is rigged to nail you. You will be a victim period. The only solution is to buy a Budapest card at the airport or tourist office. You have unlimited transit and are safe. They are more expensive , but hassle free and worth the extra money. The other alternative is to buy a 24 hour pass at the Metro, cheaper than the Budpapest card and it will also protect you. We got nailed on our way back to the hotel in the last hour of our trip, our Budapest Card expired, and we bought tickets...big mistake!

That said, Budapest is incredible. Fantastic food,a beautiful, definite must see city.

Last Visit:September 2007
I stayed there for 5 nights and was not impressed with the hotel at all (Can't changed hotels because hotels.com didn't let me.) First of all, the hotel claimed to be 4 stars, infact there was nothing 4 stars about it, more like a 2 stars hotel, the room was small and felt cramped. My room was on the second floor and everytime I walk in the hall way all I can small is the grease from the kitchen. The beds where extremely uncomfortable and there were small holes in the bed sheets. The service staff was unfriendly and sexist. I travel with a male partner and the room was registered under my name, yet the whole time my male partner was addressed to, while I have to catch the male receptionist attention and also was given an attitude. I will never recommend this place to anyone, it's not worth the value of your dollar. The only good thing about this hotel is, it's right in front of the Danube River and transportation is convenient and it's in Castle Hill area. Yet there are more hotels on the same street that's worth your money than this one.

  • Liked — Location convenient
  • Disliked — Bad front desk staff service and small cramped room.

What can i say one of the greatest hotels i've ever stayed at.. We had a room that faced the river Danube and it was a beautiful sight every morning. Even though it rained now and again it made our holiday so much more special.

Staff were great, restaurant was lovely along with the bar and the hotel itself was very special. Great value for money what you would pay for a Ibis in London but better than a Hilton.

Definately recommend that if you get the chance stay here for the experience i can't beleive anyone in the world will have a bad experience as long as the hotel carries on doing what they are doing.

Stayed in this Hotel for 3 nights recently. No breakfast included in our rate but the hotel is really lovely. Very modern and amazing views, the Danube view rooms are well worth the extra €20 per night. Views are amazing. Go to the little sea food restaurant on the corner, right as you leave the hotel. The food is amazing and really reasonable. The best way to get about is to walk 500m to the train and get the underground as there is a lot of walking involved. You can easily walk to the City Centre if you need to, although you are pretty close to everything here.

The staff at reception were really helpful. Hire bikes and go to St Margarets Island if you can!

Stayed at Art'otel Buda side, great room with view over Danube, no balcony but had patio style doors so were able to sit and enjoy sundowners watching world go by. Tram stop outside hotel and metro only a short walk, hotel staff very good at pointing us in the right direction. Went on Hop on Hop off sightseeing bus excellent to get overview of city then returned next day to visit places we would like to explore further, bought tickets from hotel for trip who then organised free taxi pick up from hotel to start of trip. Castle district at rear of hotel, steps to top, a bit steep for us so caught tram and went up vernicular to top, well worth a visit. Also went to Gelert baths short tram stop from hotel, great building thermal pools very relaxing did not try outside pool but looked great for anyone wanting swim/sunbathing went instead to Gelert Hotel to view hotel interior and try their cocktails!!!! Last morning went on boat trip before flying back in afternoon, excellent first class service and commentary on boat. Only drawback with Hotel was when we came to settle bill, which they quoted in euros, they converted to Hugarian florints at hotel rate which made bill about 20% more expensive than we thought, but looking at quote it was in small writng on bottom just something to be aware of when budgeting.
Overall excellent trip.

This is a great hotel on the Buda side, stylish and well appointed, and reasonably well located (3 blocks to the metro). I just wanted to mention something about upgrading to the danube river view rooms. When I arrived at my room I discovered that I had been given a danube river room without asking for it - it is not something that I would be particularly happy about having to pay for, given that the view is actually across a busy express way, you get virtually the same view standing outside the hotel door, and the Pest side of the river is not particularly scenic (with the obvious exception of the Parliament building, which is spectactular). Although the double glazing on the windows shuts out all the noise from the expressway, it means that you have to sleep with the windows shut and aircon on. I actually would have preferred a room with a view of the Buda hill, which I personally found much more picturesque and atmospheric.

Lucky us, we hit Budapest during a record-breaking heatwave. Thank God our room had fantastic air conditioning. The staff was great, and the view from our room was amazing. We did not experience any road noise. The bed was not the best, but acceptable, and the bathroom was small but functional if poorly lit. Would definitely stay here again.
