“pleasant city break”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 19, 2010

We stayed at the Danubius Health Spa Helia for three nights. The hotel is clean and boasts a spa area which comprises a swimming pool, hot pools, jacuzzi and sauna which were all free to use. The spa area was clean and great to come back to when you have been out all day sight seeing. The food at the hotel was absolutely discusting, even the breakfast is pretty poor. I did think the food all over budapest was below standard and exspensive too. The food is only really the bad part to the trip. The location is fine, we walked into town everyday along the river which is nice. If you are looking for nightlife, there is a big night club on the island which is worth visiting. Overall a nice break but definitely not in a rush to go back.

Stayed in Helia for two weeks over Christmas and New Years. Had bought a package deal with spa treatments and we enjoyed every bit of it!

Contrary to previous reviews, we didn't find hotel location to be an issue, it took less than 10 minutes to walk to the nearest Metro, and there was a trolley bus stop right in front of the hotel too. The Metro was very frequent, usually it only took only 2-3 minutes to wait, and the it took less than 10 minutes to city center (Deak Ferenc Ter). The Budapest metro is very very fast! (and contrary to statements about Metro tickets, getting a weekly ticket at the nearest station was easy and using it even easier, buy it, sign it, just keep it with you att all times, show it, no hassle what so ever.)

Most of the hotel staff spoke good English, some spoke fluent German, as well as French and Russian. The hotel and rooms (and the spa) were kept very clean. TV in the room, BBC Worldservice, NBC business, French, German, Chinese, Japanese channels as well as one Arabic and Russian one as well as a couple of Hungarian channels and a few movie channels, both in orginal language or dubbed to Hungarian, no CNN. Wi-Fi available in the hotel, however not for free or even cheap. There were several different packages to select from based on how connected you want to be.

Since we had half board, we had an excellent varied breakfast buffet in the hotel every morning, as well as lunch or dinner every day included in the deal. The food at lunch/dinner was very good indeed, sometimes a buffet sometimes a 3 course special menu with several main courses to select from. Not sure what a previous reviewer said about tea, the hotel had an excellent selection of both black and green as well as herbal teas, including English breakfast, which was also available in the room.

The spa treatments and the thermal baths themselves were a bliss for stressed out souls. Getting a massage 3-4 times a week is just wonderful! The thermal baths were soothing, there were 3 of them, plus a non-thermal lap pool. Two of the thermals had temperature of 36-38C (96-100F) and the third one 32-34C (89-93F). There were also both saunas and steam baths separately for men and women. Just a note, one does not swim in the thermal baths, you just lounge for the recommended 15-20 minutes (or longer if you like). The thermals in Helia are suited to those with arthritis (based on the mineral content of the water which is pumped from the Margiziget island hot spring). Even if you do not get spa treatments, the thermals are free to enjoy for the hotel guests. There is also a good gym. We usually had our massages/treatments before lunch, after lunch to town for sightseeing, and when back in the hotel, soak in the thermal baths for a half an hours. It was wonderful!

The hotel is located in a residential area, and there is a small supermarket across the street, as well as a cosmetics shop and some other small shops. Supermarket sells also wine and liquor. And they obviously sell paprika too :-) There are also a few small restaurants and cafes in the area. Walk over to the Margaret (Margitziget) Island takes about 35-40 minutes. The island is a nice place to walk around, no cars. Lot of locals go there for their Sunday walks, with kids and dogs, and there's even a small church there that offers services on Sundays (and Saturdays). For joggers they have a selected soft path (rubber?) that goes around the island along the Danube.

We liked Budapest a lot, found the people very friendly and helpful, going out of their way to help wayward tourists. The food was excellent, and there was a lot to see and to do. Definetely a return trip is going to have to be planned during the warmer part of the year.

The location was average, but not bad how somebody wrote. We could easily get to the Metro station and get to different malls in 15-20 or 30 minutes. Near the hotel there was the famous "island" on the Danube river. It is very nice there, becuase u dont meet any cars, all tourist can walk there, or rent different bikes with 2,3,4 wheels :) We really recommend this island.
The rooms were were very clean, the service was good. the hotel has very -very good spa, 3 indoor pools, with different temperature and all with thermal water. There is turkish and finland bath (about open area pools we dont know, we have visited the hotel in october).
We were having just breakfast and that was good.
We stayed only 4 days so we could find any negative points.
We enjoyed
p.s. Also take trip on boat with dinner included! ;)

This is an excellent hotel for a conference. It provides the conference with excellent facilities, the rooms are comfortable, the spa is apparently excellent and with every type of torture facility for those who want it and the staff extremely helpful. In addition the food that was laid on for the conference was outstanding and the breakfast for all was one of the best that I have been offered in this part of Europe.

Two things spoilt it for me. Firstly after travelling for 3 weeks throughout Central Europe this is the first hotel that charges for wifi internet connection. It is not the cost of it that rankles only that it charges at all, because it is possible to access the internet free in virtually every cafe and restaurant from Gdansk to Budapest and often in many hot spots throughout each city, town and often village in between. It costs the hotel hardly anything to provide it and so it is the most obvious rip-off aimed entirely at the conference brigade who know no better and have little or no time to go elsewhere.

Secondly the conference I was attending is an annual event at which we meet up with many old friends and often many new ones as well. We arrange to go out each evening to an event which usually terminates at about 10.30, from which we head to the bar. The bar staff on the first night insisted on closing the bar at midnight, despite there being a whole crowd of people enjoying themselves. The organisers spoke to the management and on the subsequent nights it stayed open a little longer, however the service was slow and the bar staff were obviously having to work long hours which did not please them. The system behind the bar needs reviewing as it is patently not working efficiently for either the staff or the customers.

It is unfortunately a long distance from the city centre and other attractions and for most people it is a 10 minute taxi ride to anywhere of interest; however taxis are relatively inexpensive when compared with London or other western European cities and providing the traveller uses some common sense (not getting into a taxi that looks like an ordinary car with a taxi sign on the roof) the metered rate is good value.

Finally the hotel is not attractive to the eye when seen from the Danube over which it looms, or from any other direction for that matter. It is a hideous building with the architectural charm of a box of matches. However being a guest you have the unique opportunity not to see it and to enjoy the comfort of all its good facilities.

I would not recommend it to tourists as there are far more convenient and better value hotels in better locations.

Stayed 4 nights at the Danubius spa in May and found the hotel to be pleasant enough inside but felt that it was far more geared up for it's conference guests and those who are spending money in the spa, we were neither. We got the feeling that they couldn't be bothered with us because we were only here as tourists and not paying to use their facalities.

We were given a room on the first floor, facing away from the river which was a shame but we didn't mind too much. However on our final nights stay they held a wedding reception just below us and it was very noisy. We complained and were moved to the 5th floor, which was better but we could still hear it. It was annoying, the last thing you want after a night out is to be disturbed by someones music and have to move rooms in order to get a good nights sleep. The hotel must have known guests on the first floor would be disturbed, I gather that we weren't the only ones to complain.

Would love to go back to Budapest, we had a great time but would choose a hotel that wasn't so out the way next time.

The hotel lies a few kilometers away from the centre and the next mero station is a 10 Min walk away. That said, the hotel is located a bit outside of the action in the centre. Given that it is facing the Danube, we often decided to walk to the city centre (good for walkers). The hotel's infrastructure is quite broad and things are pretty clean. The advantage here is that you have the thermal spa on the groundfloor. The spa is quite comprehensive in terms of offering, but the the quality of the apparel for instance does not match western standards, but it is still good. I can recommend the hotel but would maybe take a hotel right in the centre.
