“Nice Hotel”
Reviewed October 15, 2008

Nice Hotel in a very good location. Five minute walk to the river and bridge. Directly across the street from the British Embassy and a nice park. Above average rooms and service meet expectations. Breakfast is NOT worth 30euros!!! Would stay again.

Bog standard five star hotel in an unattractive building. Good location. Started off badly when I tipped both the hotel taxi driver and the porter $100 instead of $10. Neither of them commented that this might be a mistake or even looked grateful. The concierge recovered the cash from the driver but the porter just glared sourly at me for the rest of the stay. Upgraded to a junior suite which was poorly decorated but functional. A leaky shower was fixed promptly. I have a particular dislike of hotels that encourage you to drink evian when there is perfectly good, but much cheaper local mineral water available - in keeping with the "we'll take your money but don't expect a smile" attitude of this hotel. Housekeeping enjoyed knocking on the door and immediately walking in before you could answer - every day we were there. Avoid.

I purchased my stay at the Kempinski through a Luxury Link package. The expiration date of the package was the weekend before I was scheduled to be in Budapest. I asked them if they would extend by a week and they were happily accommodating. In fact, all the staff here were friendly, polite and went out of their way to be hospitable. Anyone you passed - from managers to housekeeping staff - all said hello, etc. Perhaps I've lived in Moscow too long but this was just an incredible breath of fresh air.

As for the rest, the Jr. Suite was lovely, the buffet brunch tasty and the spa and pool quite nice. The location, though without a river view, was central and a nice and short walk to just about everything.

Wow! That sums up our stay in Budapest and the Corvinus Kempinski Hotel. Great hospitality from a friendly staff that spoke excellent English and were always willing to assist you with anything you needed. The hotel gets high marks from us for not only service, but there scrumptious buffet breakfast, which is the best we have seen so far in our many journeys around the globe. Room was spacious, very clean and comfortable. Bedding was firm and their linens of high quality (bedding to me is important at any hotel we stay at).
The location is perfect for site seeing, as the Hop on, Hop Off buses start from right across the street as well as many other tours and just a short walk to the piers from the Danube cruises (we took a day and night one to enjoy the sites). You can also walk to St. Stephens Basilica, the Opera House, the famous Dohany Street Synagogue, the Chain Bridge to go to the Buda Castle and Heroes Square (well this one is about 2 miles for those who like a nice stroll, but there is also Europes second oldest subway, refurbished of course to take you there).

The concierge is professional and can even sell you subway tickets and arrange anything you may want to do, as well as make reservations for the many restaurants in the city.

We ate at the Museum Restaurant, which had traditional Hungarian dishes and an old world atmosphere. More delicious Hungarian food at Menza, where many of the locals go as well. Also we found excellent Indian food at a place called Indigo, and if you like vegetarian food, on the go, there is a nice cafeteria style bistro right around the corner from the Kempinski called Vegetarianus Express.

The wines from the Eger region were a surprise. We enjoyed many bottles at all our meals, with different varietal types and affordable as well. Oh, by the way, beer is cheaper to drink than water or soft drinks, so do not miss trying the great darks, lights and wheats that they have to offer. I make it a point to try beer in every country we visit.

Best things to buy; Marzipan, Paprika (both hot and sweet), a plum liquor (name escapes me at the moment, but it is like grappa and they also offer it in many other flavors as well). At the airport they sell great goose liver pate to take back home with you, if you enjoy that type of delicacy.

Exchange rate was pretty good and I found it much more affrodable than other large European cities and very safe to travel around both day and night.

The Hungarian people are quite proud of their heritage and it shows, which made the visit much more pleasureable and for us, cultural, an important factor for an exceptional vacation.

We will go back to Budapest and will stay again at the Kempinski, not sure when, but do hope it is soon. Do not miss a trip to Budapest.

We just got back from a trip that included 4 nights at the Kempinski Budapest. I really struggled to choose a hotel and I picked the winner! The location was perfect- we walked to everything. The corner Jr. Suite (900) faced a lovely park, was furnished in lovely happy yellow tones, and was spacious. My 21 yr old son said the rollwaway bed was excellant too. The only negative of the hotel was the size of the spa (small) but it was very nice. The breakfast buffet was so filling that we usually skipped lunch. Staff were all top notch, giving us umbrellas on a cloudy day and towels for a trip to the Szechenyi Baths(separate review). They also booked a tour to the Parliament for us and we walked right by the long line of people waiting with our small group (about $35 pp with hotel pickup). After check-in the 1st night we wanted to walk around and discover the area-right around the corner we found the Danube River and restaurant Dunacorso with beautiful views of the Buda castle across the river. The Chicken Paprikash was amazing. The best thing we did was hire a private guide-Andrew Illes from www.guideinbudapest.com. We had him pick us up at the airport (less exlensive than hotel arrangement) and another day took a 1/2 day tour to Szentendre with him. I told him that I wanted a lace tablecloth, and to try a langos. He took us right to a store with excellant tablecloths and good prices (I had checked others the previous day) and to a "locals only" langos vendor, hidden up an alley. They are fried bread (we had it with cheese) and also tried jam and cottage cheese pancakes. These were the best things I ate on our entire trip! He was professional and knowledgeable and added greatly to our trip. Also don't miss the great Synagogue (take the tour) , St. Stephan's , walk across the Chain Bridge and take the funicular up to the Castle District- all in walking distance.Budapest beats Prague in every way!

The Kempinski is an excellent hotel, but is typically my third choice in Budapest - a city that I visit often on business. I stay at the Kempinski typically once a year, and tend to use Le Meridien (next door) or the occasionally the Sofitel (for the view) in preference.

The hotel is now over 12 years old and beginning to show it. Some areas and rooms have been refurbished and refitted; some had not when I last visited. However, the standard of accommodation and amenities in the rooms is generally high. The place is comfortable.

Staff are courteous and helpful, especially at the front desk.

Food is hit and miss. As others have said, the breakfast buffet is probably the best in Budapest. The cafe area behind the lobby is a great place for afternoon tea. Dinner, though, tends to disappoint me; there are better options (fortunately plentiful in Budapest), especially at those prices!

The hotel has charm, class and style but the charges are an irritant unless one can get a spectacularly good deal in the off season - and even then the extras mount up. Hence its number 3 status on my Budapest list, not including the Four Seasons which I have yet to try.
