Hotel Papillon

Hotels in the very centre of Budapest can be pricey and the cheaper ones are usually miles from the centre. However we were lucky enough to stumble upon the Hotel Papillon.
Just a short walk from the tram stops and metro (Moskva Ter) and within walking distance of the castle district. The hotel is on a hill - not good for aching feet after a full day walking but don't worry - the hotel has a lift.

The hotel its self was lovely. Friendly and very helpful staff throughout all of my enquiries prior to booking, and just as brilliant during our stay. The staff booked us our taxi's to and from the hotel (at a fixed price cheaper than if you hailed one at the airport) and even looked after our luggage to allow us to continue sight seeing on the day we flew home.
The room is your standard hotel room. Large comfortable (but firm) bed with fresh sheets every day, TV, toilet/shower room, mini bar, safe etc. What made our room extra special however was the view. From the room you could see the chain bridge, the river Danube, the castle district, palace, Gelert hill etc. etc. Very beautiful at night when everything was lit up. You sat and looked out the window at night rather than watched the TV.

Breakfast was your usual hotel buffet with selection of cereal, toast, pastries and fruit.
The hotel also offers meals during the day and evening. However, we weren't impressed.
The hotel also has it's own "piano bar" next door, which we did not visit, and an outdoor pool and seating area.

The hotel was one of the cheapest I found in Budapest and I simply will not fault it. Good value, great location and great staff. A fantastic base to explore Budapest from.
If I visit Budapest again; this will be the first place I look to stop.

We picked this hotel based on reviews by other people. It looked quite nice on the pictures, but it's didn't jump out as a particular good looking place to stay.
When we arrived, the staff was very friendly. We got one of the corner rooms on the 4th or 5th floor with a pretty nice view over the surrounding blocks. Don't expect a marvelous view of the city here, but there are plenty of perfect spots for this around Budapest. The room was very spacious and clean.
However, there was an annoying smell in the bathroom. After a quick search we noticed it originated from a small drainage in the floor. I reported this at the reception and they assured me it would be taken care of the same day. And as promised, when we came back to our room that evening everything was fixed.
The breakfast was sufficient and good.

The hotel is located on the West bank of the river with a 5-10 min walk to the nearest tram station. From there you can go anywhere in the city. The neighborhood is calm.

Consider this little hotel if your looking for a simple, clean and friendly place to stay!

Great value little hotel and in an excellent location if you have good legs. Its a 5 minute walk from the tramlines and buses, but that is up a hill which becomes pretty steep near the top; an issue for those with bad knees.

The first room they put me in was in a new annex. The room was extremely spacious and quiet. The curtains were flimsy but there were continental blinds as well which give a pretty complete blackout. However the annex is a couple of minutes walk from the main hotel - down the road and round the corner, then up another road.

I preferred to move to the hotel proper, which was fine. The staff apologised for the small room which was the only one available in the main hotel, but I didnt find it particularly small.

Reception was manned by a single multilingual person which caused queues at times, but I found the staff very willing and helpful.

The breakfast was good except for the lack of fresh fruit and the oversalted eggs. I tried one evening meal in the restaurant and can recommend it for anyone who likes their food heavily salted and their fruit salad from a tin (!). Not to my taste, but you can eat well in several restaurants near to the hotel.

Pool tiny, and empty whilst I was there. Wi Fi existed but most of the time could only be accessed from the hotel bar; signal in bedroom kept coming and going. There is an internet computer for guest use in the main reception room.

All in all, not perfect, but very good value for the money. It didn't feel like a budget hotel.

Clean, average size rooms, comfortable. The receptionist was a bit rude at times, when we wanted help she would talk to us and then immediatley start a new conversation with someone else who spoke Hungarian and would get back to us after she was done - it happened over and over again. Location is ok, could probably find something closer and still pay cheaper.

Hotel is situated only few minutes from Moszkva ter (square) and Mammut shopping center. Tram stop (4,6) is aprox 150m. Direct tram to Nyugati train station, Westend shopping center, Blaha Lujza square (near keleti train station) and near buda castle, downtown and Margit island with thermal water pools.
Nearest old turkish spa with thermal water is Kiraly Bath, aprox 500m

I booked standart single room for last minute price.
Receptionist was very helpful and polite. She asked me, if I would like to sleep in a small single room in main building or in bigger room in annex.
Annex was situated aprox 100m from the hotel.

Room was with terrace, very nice 3* standart. Only TV wasnt good.
Breakfast was standart: (ham, hungarian salami, one type of cheese, butter, honey, jam and jogurth, Orange and apple juices, tea or coffe).

Hotel offered free of charge welcome cocktail and private restaurant
3-course dinner menu for only 9 Eur.

Staffs: were extremely nice. Location: not that central, and a little bit hidden on a side street, but the tram stop is not so far away. And within the proximity, supermarket and restaurant as well as snack boots are available around the main road. Room: the bed room was quite small, but with the shower room of almost the same size, very strange. All in all, nothing was perfect but everything was ok, this might be the charm of that kind of a small family run hotel. So, the hotel met my expectation corresponding to the price of the room, so 4 points.

The hotel location is nice (close to Mamute mall, Buda castle, bridge, churches), but you need to trudge a "hill" and some stairs in puzzled corridors to step to your room. Besides that the staff and services (nice dinner, standard breakfast) compensates the hurdle if you don't care for amenities and pride more your money than confort. The rooms were clean, but the toilet paper was of very low quality, calefation was good, room size adequate and bathroom small.
