“Nice place close to Andrassy Blvd”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 3, 2009

This is a rather small hotel with few amenities. The breakfast was good and our room was very spacious.

We chose this hotel because of its location. Only a few blocks away from Andrassy and one of the subway lines makes transportation easy. Budapest is pretty big, but we walked everywhere within the city. The location of Ambra makes this possible.

When staying just for a long weekend, the Ambra is a great place as a base for daily excursions, as you don't have to waste precious time on unnecessary transportation.

Upon arrival: Very friendly, helping, relaxed staff. They all speak english. We got the room we requested.

The room (standard double): Medium sized room, comfortable big beds (we got a stdtwin, but the beds are next to eachother), desk and something else I used as a makeup desk.
It was cosy, but average. The curtains were dark enough to shield us from the breakfast guests below which had a clear view into bedroom if curtains not closed. The bathroom was nice and big, the shower good. The floor did flood after each shower since there is only half a door, but we just asked for more towels to cover the floor with afterwards. It would have been nice with some chairs (there was one), but maybe they have that in the superior rooms. True to the pictures on their website.

The location was the best. A quiet street only 10 min walk away from most other main streets. You also have lots of restaurants and coffee shops nearby.

The breakfast: Average. It is included in the price depending on which channel you book through. We booked through Ambra's own hotel site and they had the cheapest rates when booking early and paying in advance.

This is not a 5* hotel. When I booked I was fully aware of this. I was not expecting anything outstanding, and I was not disappointed. Overall this is a good hotel, and above average considering the cost. The location is central and staff is friendly. I have no complaints and I would stay here again.

I stayed at this hotel in April 2008. We had reserved a triple only to arrive at 12:30a to be told that they could not hold our room past 12 midnight so we would have to stay in a double. We were very tired and just wanted to sleep. They did offer us a mattress which was carried in and placed on the floor for the third person. One towel had a large hole in it and the shower door would not stay closed which caused a bathroom flood each morning. We considered leaving after the first night but decided not to carry our luggage to a new hotel for only another night. The breakast was fair, but not included in the hotel price as most other European hotels. Upon check out we were told we would have a discount for the inconvenience, but never did receive the 10% discount. I exchanged several emails to no avail. The location was fine, but that is all I can say for this 4 star hotel. Enjoy the web site as the stay will doubtfully get better from there.

The hotel has a cheap feel to it, and I can't figure why they are allowed to market themselves with 4 stars. It looks rubbish and smells terrible. The reception wasn't very welcoming or friendly, but as it turns out, this is to be expected in Budapest. Breakfeast was decent.

Location is great though. Just a couple of minutes walk to Andrassy ut., where you can find high-end restaurants and stores. If that's not your cup of tea, then just follow the street down towards the more touristy area near the bridge to Buda.

If you can get a good price for a room, and are just in need of somewhere to sleep, I would give it 4 - **** stars, because of the location.

If you are expecting a 4 star hotel on the other hand.....

This is an absolutely awful hotel. Avoid like the plague!! Stayed here in May 2008, and believe me the photos on their site do not, in any way reflect reality in any way! Outside of the hotel looks ok, but reception is a joke. It took ages to be seen. Then when we emerged from the lift on our floor it was like stepping into a horror movie. The corridors are dark, and dingey...we arrived in our room and it was awful...it was near the roof and their was a slant on our ceiling and brown net curtains which looked like they'd seen better days, and a small CRT television with very few stations. We had ordered a double bed, but we were given a two single beds pushed together with separate single bed linen!! The airconditioning wasn't working and the room was roasting! We complained at front desk and were put in a room which was equally as bad...we stayed the night in the room in a pool of sweat, and the next morning we said that we wanted to leave and were looking for alternative accommodation. This was only a three night getaway so one night being ruined was pretty bad. The only saving grace of the hotel was the fact that they agreed to refund the remaining nights. Avoid!

  • Liked — Absolutely nothing - the surrounding area is "scary" !! (although they did refund the remainder of my stay)
  • Disliked — Everything (except the refund above)

Although the hotel street may seem pretty bad at first, totally different experience comes in the morning when you realize you are in the very heart of this big city. It takes only a minute walk to Andrassy street which is wonderful for a stroll. Hotel is renewed and the rooms are nice and clean (but without balcony) and the bathroom is really nice. Breakfast is ok, only in a pretty small room. Overall: you can't ask nothing more from a small buffet hotel.

We spent spent 3 nights at the Hotel Ambra in September 2008. We were thoroughly underwhelmed. The location was close enough to the major sites, but did not have very much close by to recommend it. There were very few restaurants that were very appealing. (Koveles on Dob. utca is a fabulous find, however.)
Our room was small, unadorned, beige box. Clean room, adequate bathroom, hard bed. It was very depressing to come back to such a plain, unappealing room.
The most objectionable issue was the service. The front desk staff was unfriendly and unhelpful. When we asked for recommendations for local restaurants, they only wanted to steer us to places to which they were obviously financially connected.
We skipped the breakfast. It seemed very overpriced for what you got. They will automatically tack on the cost unless you object.
Look for better in Budapest!
