“The cheapest 5 star with river view in Budapest”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 7, 2012

The location couldn't be better, very close to Vorosmarty ter metro station, Vaci Utca shopping area and has a great view overlooking the Danube river and Buda. Unfortunately, the staff was not so friendly. When I booked from booking.com, I asked for a smoking room but the staff said it was full, they only have executive smoking room for an additional EUR50 per night (we got EUR 90 per night for standard room). We did not take it since it's too pricey. And we also asked if there is money changer around and the staff said there was ONE near the hotel but probably it's already closed (it was around 5pm). When we checked there, there ARE plenty of money changer in Vaci Utca and open until late at night!
They did not provide coffee or tea in the room, and also there was no free wi-fi connection. But overall, I enjoy staying here.

It seems trivial to dock this hotel a star for having no kettle, but as a Brit, I need my tea!

It really is a fantastic location, with the main shopping streets, tourist sites, public transport and the river all within easy reach. The view from the rooms varies from average to stunning depending on side of hotel (go for even numbered rooms, from x10 upwards, for the best views) and floor.

We weren't disturbed by noise from the riverside walk underneath the hotel, nor by traffic or other guests. The soundproofing is great. However, the aircon is a little loud and the room got warm, even in Feb, so might cause some people an issue (although it didn't really bother us). Room was a good size, with a good sized bathroom too, and the furnishings (not really 5 star, but not bad by any means) were fine.

It's a business-focused hotel (or that's how it felt), so it's functional and clean, but the broadband fees are ASTRONOMICAL, and the cost of breakfast made my eyes water (we had breakfast out every day).

All in all though, a good hotel in Budapest (well, Pest to be specific) and there are some great rates to be found; we got ours for £68 per night from "notfirst60second".com (don't know I'm allowed to say the real site, so a cryptic clue will have to do!).

Some restaurants worth mentioning: Callas (next to the Opera House), Kőleves Vendéglő / Stonesoup Restobar (not far from Opera House), Vén Hajó Etterem (riverboat restaurant - moored - opposite the Sofitel, by the Chain Bridge) and Százéves Etterem (round the corner from the hotel). Also, an pizzeria between the hotel and the Sofitel, facing the river looked and smelled fantastic but was fully booked when we were free.

Room Tip: Go for even numbered rooms, from x10 upwards, for the best views, as they face the Chain Bridge and...

A perfect location minutes from top attractions and public transport, and a stunning view of the castle district.

I usually prefer boutique hotels to chain hotels, but this Marriott is really sensational - the staff spoke excellent English and gave us good suggestions for transit and nearby restaurants.

Rooms are very comfortable, large and clean with a great bed. Our view was directly of the castle, as lovely a s a post card. In any other city this would have cost a fortune, but the rate here was 89 euros per night. Skip the overpriced breakfast buffet in favor of a local coffee shop.

Within a short walk (all along a riverside promenade) are art galleries, restaurants and shopping, the chain bridge and funicular up to the castle district, and the metro line to the public baths and Heroes Square.

Room Tip: River view, higher floor.

I stayed in the Marriott over the Christmas period and I had an excellent stay.

The best location for a hotel in Budapest. The Marriott is in the city centre, so restaurants (Onyx restaurant) and shopping (Vaci Street) are in walking distance. Additionally, it is right on the embankment of the Danube therefore gorgeous views and a very quiet neighbourhood. The building is a concrete block in a layered pyramid shape that might look a bit dated from the outside, but do not be discouraged by that. The Marriott guarantees the best views in Budapest as every room has a river view. The north side of the hotel offers views of the Castle and the Chain bridge; the south wing has views over Elizabeth bridge, the Castle and the Citadel. I have stayed in both over the years and although both views are rewarding I would personally prefer to stay in the north side.

The hotel is in an affluent district of the city and the hotel is very secure. You need your room key to use the lift to all floors. The lobby is elegant, it has a piano bar, a restaurant and a few shops. The recepcionist welcomed me with a smile and she made the check-in easy and quick. Great service.

Initially I was contemplating between a Deluxe and an Executive Room. The Executive Room is on a higher floor and give you excess to the Executive Lounge where the continental breakfast is served. On the other hand breakfast buffet was included in the price of the Deluxe Room. As we prefer a warm breakfast we chose the Deluxe Room. The room was spacious (Marriott Standard), beautifully decorated and had amazing views. The bathroom was clean and modern. Room service was quick. Our room didn’t have a balcony which was fine considering that it was freezing outside. But last time I stayed at the Marriott in the summer and it was so relaxing reading a book early in the morning on the sunlit balcony overlooking the Danube.

The breakfast is served on the ground floor in the restaurant with views of the Castle. There was a good selection of food: bacon, scrambled eggs, pancakes, fresh fruit, continental breakfast selection, pastries and a made-to-order omelette station. My only complaint would be that the far end of the restaurant was a smoking area and you could smell the cigarette smoke from a few tables away. Quite disappointing during breakfast. I believe that Hungary went “smoke-free” as of 1st January 2012, so - as in the UK - no smoking is allowed in public areas as bars and restaurants. Excellent!

Overall, Marriott is a 5 star hotel at a 5 star location with reasonable prices. I can highly recommend it.

Room Tip: All rooms have river views, but the North side of the building is slightly better as it looks over t...

We stay in Budapest pretty regularly and usually in the Marriott Apartments or similar, however we were in Budapest for New Years Eve and decided to stay here and treat ourselves.
The Hotel staff were friendly and helpful, the hotel was of course very busy due to New Years Eve and we arrived around 6pm, luckily just before a large tour tied up the lifts!!!
Our room was very clean, comfortable and the beds and view were outstanding, I would say the bathrooms are ok, but look a little out dated to me compared to the finish in the room.
There was lots of information to be had if you needed it, but we went out for New Year and came back and watched the last of the fireworks over the danube from the enormous almost floor to ceiling window of our room.
The room had all the usual amenities you would expect.
Breakfast was good and plentiful and restocked constantly but being New Year the breakfast was busy and we had to wait for a tale or join a table of strangers, which I didnt want to do and im sure the strangers would not want me and my family sat down by them either. I thought this was strange to be offered, and have never experienced this before unless I was part of a group or tour or something. I imagine they were just trying to seat guests quickly but it was badly organised when 2 people were sat at a table for 6 and 8 and tables for 2 were vacant. It wasnt a big issue just an observation.
We enjoyed our stay very much, New Year was a great time to be in Budapest and if the rates are good compared to where we usually stay I am sure we will stay again.

Room Tip: Get a room over looking the Danube

Excellent location overlooking river and short walk to shopping and restaurants. But room was so hot and uncomfortable that we left a day early. Weather was indeed chilly outside but with windows as wide open as possible we were miserable.
