This is a very peaceful oasis in a very busy and vibrant city. There is an olympic sized swimming pool where the residents of Budapest take time out during their very hot summers to cool off. Many outdoor cafes to sit and enjoy a glass of excellent Hungarian wine as you watch the world go by.

Margaret Island translated from the Hungarian Margit Sziget offers not just the opportunity to have a leisurely stroll and take in the fountain with musical co-ordination but also has a running track made of the sort of stuff you get in childrens playgrounds to take the strain of running....never seen that before, certainly not in a park. There were dozens of people using this facility. I have to admit walking on it was very good for the feet after walking around the island for most of the afternoon.

Even though it was late September some flowers were still in bloom and the scent of these was a real feast for the nose. It was glorious sunshine too.

As we were stopping nearby we decided to come back and try out the car bikes built for two, thinking this would be a quicker way of getting around. Wrong! It was a very good exercise for the legs and we are glad we only had it for half an hour or we might not have been able to walk away from it. Our legs ached! But we felt better for it and had a good laugh along the way.

Many locals like to escape the city and come to Margaret Island to walk, run, or ride their bikes. Children can rent little peddle cars and drive like little angels or maniacs depending on their parenting. There are places to get ice cream and snacks. There is a beautiful fountain that is set to music, stay around a while, the song and water pattern will change. Well done. They have a rubberized jogging lane, swimming pool with high dive (check the schedule). There are many beautiful trees to look up to and admire. No shortage of smokers or cigarette butts. No need to pay for a guided tour, just get a good guide book to tell you what to see.

The park is really a get away place in the middle of the busy city of Budapest. Lots of space for the children to run around and playgrounds to keep them busy. Be careful where you decide to eat as there are only a few places and some of them seem to use the advantage of being few to serve something they call food.
