Save a day to go to this incredible island in the middle of the Danube. Rent a bike or go for a walk, get a coffee and enjoy the nicest gardens of the city

“Going to one place in Budapest? Go here.”
Reviewed September 26, 2012

I lived in Budapest for a year, and Margaret Island was by far my favourite place in the city.

It is a giant part on an island, and includes the ruins of two monasteries, a zen garden, a bandstand, a few cafes, ice cream stands, and acres of park land where you can sit an enjoy the sun.

My absolute favourite place to sit (and one of my top places in the world for a picnic) was in the ruins of the old monastery. There's a small tree, with a bench beneath it, and you can sit in the shade and watch the world go by. So peaceful.

I also like sitting beneath the tree in the zen garden (I think it's a cherry tree, gorgeous blossom anyway), beside the waterfall, watching the terrapins in the water.

The musical fountain makes me smile.

There are many places to buy langos (a Hungarian snack, deep dried dough covered in sour cream and cheese), frankfurters and potato wedges. You can also rent pedal cars and golf buggy's to drive around the island.

“very tired”
Reviewed September 25, 2012

The japanese garden was pretty but nothing special. Eerily also went to the hotel margitziget . It was empty and did not have grand elegance expected of such a grand hotel. Not worth getting off the boat to view. We were the only ones who got off and now we know why !

“pleasant but a bit 'tired'”
Reviewed September 25, 2012

took tram to southern end of island & walked to northern tip. Pleasant to be away from the traffic noise with the sun shining through the trees - there are some huge ones dotted about. Alot of the lawns, flower beds, etc are poorly tended. The tower at the cafe part way along, appeared almost derelict & there was some loud retro music blaring out. We felt we had walked into a time warp!! Overall an ok way to spend a couple of hours but don't expect a well-manicured garden.

“A nice place to walk and jog”
Reviewed September 22, 2012

It is in the middlle of the Danube River. It is quiet and nicely landscaped with lots of trees and seasonal flowers. There is a hotel there. With tree-lined walkways to jog or walk and enjoy the river at the same time. Do bring mosquito repellent. I was eaten alive.
