“We walked miles to eat here, but why?”
Reviewed April 28, 2013

Don't get me wrong, there is nothing wrong with the bakery's traditional Hungarian donut-like baked good, but that is basically all there is--no fancy pastries, no coffee concoctions or ice creams, and the neighborhood is less than pleasing--sort of seedy. There is no ambiance here to speak of, and we were just so disappointed after having seen this place rated as the number one bakery in Budapest by Trip Advisor reviewers. We literally schlepped all over to get here, and the Trip Advisor's application had a gps locator that placed the bakery on the wrong side of the street--a street that was undergoing major construction. It was dusty and noisy and we had to traverse the street by way of an underground passage--we were definitely in the mood to take a break in a beautiful bakery/cafe, and we would have ordered more, except that the menu was as sparse as the baked goods case. Why did we come here, again?

“Traditional Hungarian speciality”
Reviewed April 6, 2013

It was Saturday noon. We walk along Vatci utca, the "la Rambla" of Budapest. Partly Sunny, and the Women with me crave for somthing sweet. And right in the middle of Vaci utca , at No. 31 was this place. you can have coffe, ice cream, but this is the place for Kurtoskalacs. its dough or pastry, roll on a cylindericl wood and set on the warm fire. you can ask sugar, vanillia, nuts, cinnamon and many more flavores. its cost 900 Huf ( $3.8 or 3 euros). worte every penny.
Open: 09:00-22:00 every day. www.kurtoskalacs.com.

“A Great Place for Coffee and Kurtoskalacs”
Reviewed March 27, 2013

These chimney cakes are so good, I don't know why anyone would go to the expensive cafes on this chic street. My friends ate them plain all the time, but I love them best with chocolate. The only problem is the limited variety - you go there for one thing, Kurtoskalacs.

“Festival Cakes!”
Reviewed March 12, 2013

Also known as chimney cakes. These were so delicious. Doughnut pastry wrapped in a cylinder shape and baked. you can have them with Cinnamon or Coconut or Walnuts or event chocolate. All cost the same price (900 fts)

They are a great sweet snack to go. Priced similar to most of the stands on the street that sell these cakes. They looked and tasted much fresher and less over done than the ones from the food stalls.
