“Great hostel in central location”
Reviewed September 18, 2012

I really liked this hostel - the location was great for visiting all the major attractions on foot and both tram and underground stops are just around the corner. The rooms were bright and clean (although it isn't as nice as the photographs on the website show ...) and the breakfast is served in a restaurant just around the corner at a discounted rate. The staff are very friendly and helpful and have plenty of advice/discount coupons ... however I did have to make a complaint when we arrived to find the room I had booked 3 months in advance (the "nicest" room according to the website) had been double booked and they had allocated us a dorm bedroom, with which I was not happy. After raising the complaint one of the receptionists transferred us into the room I booked the following day, which would have meant that somebody else would have been disappointed too but it is something they have to address. Having said that, all in all it's a great place to stay in central Budapest and I would stay here again.

Stayed a few nights in this hostel, in a double room with private shower. All the rooms were remarkebly clean. Very friendly staff. Good location: nearby the center of Budapest but no noice in your room. It is a little bit hard to find, all the buildings look the same and there are hostels on every corner in Budapest but you can just ask somebody on the street, like I did.

Great area near Astoria tube station and walking distance to bars and restaurants. The bar on the corner is open 24 hours and serves good beer at great prices with friendly staff. The downside is there are lots of bunks in each room with the exception of one room that has 2 doubles. The bunks are 3 high so you need to be quite fit to get up and down the ladders, each room has a kind of bathroom module with shower and sink and it gets quite steamy when 10 people have showers. To gain entry to the hostel there is a bell you ring to gain access to the foyer, however on some occasions you have to wait quite a while. Beware in summer the rooms get very hot especially on the top bunks, it makes it impossible to sleep well, one of our party said it was like sleeping on the top shelf of an oven. On the last night we moved out to the Intercontinental for a good nights sleep.

We can not recommend this hostel. We got not booked the room, but a much smaller one. This was not very clean and easy on the bunk bed, a bunk increased. Unreasonable for three people. This room had about 10 square meters with a shower in the same room. After shower every three people stayed in was in the room a tropical climate.
Too bad, because from there you can run the city on foot. We think in the near there are better hostels.

We had a terrible stay here and would not recommend this to anyone.

Firstly, there was the booking error. Our Double bed room was double booked. We were informed via email (no phone call) at 8:30pm when we were already on a night bus. We were not the only ones "double booked", as were taking the room from someone else also.

Secondly, there is no 24 hour reception as advertised in booking.com. We arrived at 5am in Budapest, and waited until 8am for the morning person to arrive to open the door. During our stay there, we never saw the night people stay for 24 hours.

Third, the staff are nice, but poorly trained. They have little information about what is available to do in Budapest, and their recommended meal cafe is bad (don't accept their offer for the meal vouchers). Due to our booking errors, the receptionist in the morning had to call for help, at which point a second receptionist arrived, who was literally drunk and admitted so with some apology.

Fourth, due to the booking error, the solution of the management was that for our second night (which was overbooked), they would offer us their cheapest "private room" and offer us an overall discount. This private room can be best described as a cubby house: small room with low ceilings, accessed via a steep stair/ladder, a small window that overlooked the front door, no bed but just a foam mattress on the floor, enough room around the foam mattress for shoes and a couple of backpacks (no room for luggage). The room was hot, small, stuffy, and is above the communal kitchen, and we had to sleep with the windows opened, windows that is just above the front entrance. Not only was the sleeping uncomfortable, the next morning we were woken very early by firstly the new guests who had arrived and could not enter (the receptionist had left at like 2-3am) and were complaining, then secondly by the ruckus in the kitchen just below us. So by accepting their discount and trying to save some money, we ended up losing a day in Budapest as we had to sleep the next day in the new hostel we moved to.

The double bed room we actually did have for one night was average. Consisted of a reasonably sized room with a 3 tier bunk bed, power point and light available at each tier. Window looked out into the back of building with air con vents and ducts. There was a sulfurous smell that came through the window at night, and the air circulating through the back of the building is slightly warm and dank. The shower was a walled of area with on ceiling and opens into the room. Most annoyingly, the shower did not have a tap, but had a water saving button like those seen in public toilets, so you have to keep pressing the button every 30 seconds in order to have a shower. Hot water was otherwise not a problem, and the shower power was reasonably as long as you keep pressing the button. The drainage appeared to be cheap, as our shower drain would gurgle, bubble, and make a fair bit of noise when someone else showers somewhere else. There is no aircon / fan.

Otherwise wifi worked well with no problems.

Location is pretty good. But having travelled Budapest, the public transport system is so good, most hostels/apartments have what can be considered good locations.

Overall we had a terrible stay due to things that will not be resolved as the place is poorly managed. We would not recommend this to anyone. As a traveller, your time is most precious, and risking that to save a few bucks is not worth it.

Room Tip: Don't choose the cheapest private room, you will literally have no where to put your stuff, and...

Perfect location with walking distance to the railway station, a non-stop shop located opposite the hostel and with opportunity to have breakfast in the hostel building. Since I was travelling alone for me it was very important that I had some nice female rommates to hang out with and that the atmosphere was pleasant and relaxed. My room was clean and tidied and the owner guy was very helpful giving me advices about where to go. Very cheap for its quality.
