“Fantastic cakes in Pest.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 26, 2012

The Szalai family has been making cakes and pastries in Budapest for almost a hundred years so they have well and truly perfected their art. If you are expecting a patisserie with grand furnishings and decor, you will be disappointed. The Szalai Cukrászda is a small, old style establishment and that is its charm. When you sit down at one of the few tables in anticipation, you feel like you have have been transported into a different era.

The Szalai Cukrászda serves superb cakes and coffee. I have been here a number of times and one would find difficult to make a bad selection. My favourites are the meggyes and the túros rétes (morello cherry and cheese strudles), however, my cousin is an expert on krémes (two layers of puff pastry filled with custard cream) and she insists that theirs is the best in the capital. I have to agree with her!

“A great little coffee/cake shop.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 23, 2012

Very reasonably priced. Around the corner from Parliament, it is a world away from the more expensive coffee shops that tourists frequent. In this small place you still get local people and you can see why - great drinks and delicious cakes and pastries, for a third of the price of the more upmarket glossy venues. The waitress was very friendly. Place felt more authentically Hungarian than the shiny expensive Gerbeaud or Luckas pâtisseries.

“Grab a Bite to Eat Here While Waiting For Your Parliament Tour”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 13, 2011

The Hungarian Parliament tours must be taken in groups with different languages offered at different times (e. g., English: 10/12/2) and you may find that the tour you want is sold out and you must take a later tour. Since there are no real other sights or places to eat near that area, you might want to get a tasty snack at this patisserie while you wait or after your tour is over. Szalai offers two items that we had that were very good. Meggyes retes is a cherry strudel and Svajci kifli is like a croissant with sugar icing on top and ground walnuts inside. Both real treats. Also available is a small selection of gelato. According to an August BBC article, the cafe has been a favorite with protestors at the Parliament taking a break from their hard work. The location is just north of the Parliament grounds and several blocks in from the river with a sign out front on the right side of the street. Historic photos on the walls and small cafe tables complete the picture. Cute place.
