The Szalai family has been making cakes and pastries in Budapest for almost a hundred years so they have well and truly perfected their art. If you are expecting a patisserie with grand furnishings and decor, you will be disappointed. The Szalai Cukrászda is a small, old style establishment and that is its charm. When you sit down at one of the few tables in anticipation, you feel like you have have been transported into a different era.
The Szalai Cukrászda serves superb cakes and coffee. I have been here a number of times and one would find difficult to make a bad selection. My favourites are the meggyes and the túros rétes (morello cherry and cheese strudles), however, my cousin is an expert on krémes (two layers of puff pastry filled with custard cream) and she insists that theirs is the best in the capital. I have to agree with her!
