“Go for the architecture”
Reviewed April 3, 2013

The building used to host a department store and was long closed before Alexandra book co bought it. The last time i visited, some 20 years ago, there was a lego exhibition and fair hosted in the Lotz cupola. It has been splendidly renovated and i am absolutely happy it is avaialble again for visit. I think the cafe itself is pretty average and tries hard to be posh, prices are high and the choices are just a mistake, why are they trying to sell French croissant here? The Hungarian choices are again fancy and overpriced. I think the best tactic is to see the place but have your cafe somewhere else.

“Beautiful bookstore and cafe”
Reviewed April 2, 2013

As the other reviewers have mentioned, it's a beautiful and opulent room. I won't go into details as I think the images would better express that.
Many reviews said the food was quite good and I found it just average really. I'm still happy that I went and experienced it, but it wasn't a complete 'wow' for me overall.

“Go look but forget about eating”
Reviewed March 27, 2013 via mobile

Lovelly to look at but over one hour to wait for two bowls of soup, and not great soup at that. Don't waste your valuable time in Budapest have a quick look at the ceiling but have lunch elsewhere

You cannot leave Budapest without visiting this wonderful building. View the opulent tea room on the first floor.

“Marvellous tea rooms in budapest”
Reviewed March 22, 2013

Roughly opposite the opera house on Andrassy utca, there is a very grand bookstore in a wonderful (30s?) building called the Paris Nagy Aruhaz...now the Alexandra bookstore. But the real attraction is upstairs where there is a magnificent tea room, complete with guilded murals on the high vaulted ceilings and a mournful pianist improvising on a grand piano. Delicious cakes, especially the fruit mousses and sublime tea, tea bag in the most luxurious wrapping...at totally reasonable prices. Much nicer than a certain other famous establishment on varosmarty square, which is priced for tourists, especially rich ones.
