“Best hostel in Europe”
Reviewed December 26, 2013

This the the best hostel I stayed at during my 3 months in Europe. the staff are amazing, you will make friends for life. It's an awesome place to meet people, the vibe is just increbile and no other hostel quite met the same levels. It made budapest my favourite city. If you don't stay at Viate I feel sorry for, so many spectacular (hazy) memories! I stayed for three extra nights then came back a month later and stayed another 4.

Room Tip: they're all good

Positives - YES, IN A BIG WAY.
Negatives - you have to leave. Vitae will send you waxing lyrical over how much you love everyone in a sickeningly-saccharine way.

Having been interrailing and sampled some amazing (and some utterly dire) hostels I had always been led to believe that when visiting a city you could have either a clean bed and a decent sleep at the cost of good atmosphere or amazing days/nights out but with no sleep and a bed shared with various unwelcome creatures (human and otherwise).
Until. . . we stumbled on the holy grail of hostels - a place with friendly people, clean beds and bathrooms and the best time of your life (start up the dirty dancing soundtrack).

We stayed at Vitae for an oh-so-short 3 nights (I think our biggest regret!). As soon as we arrived we were greeted by a flurry of staff, semi-staff (these long-term guests are difficult to distinguish) and guests alike. It is like a cosy, incestuous family which you feel a part of from opening the door to long after leave (sob sob).

The nights out were amazing, but there was never the ‘forced fun’ element you get at some party hostels, these guys are all just genuinely friendly, party-hearty people. They are also really knowledgeable about the area, suggesting lots of places to visit, eat at etc and even taking us to some themselves. There is a fairly early noise curfew meaning if you do go out you have the whole night to sample budapest’s amazing bars but if you stay in the hostel will be pretty quiet so you can sleep off the jet-lag/hangover/bangover.

The set up of the hostel is great, with an open plan kitchen, lounge area and reception. This means that there are always people around to watch a film, eat or play drinking games with.

The staff -
THE BEST hostel staff I have ever met. They are the smiliest, most welcoming, most fun, fastest drinking, highest stakes s**theading bunch I have ever met. They also work super hard cleaning the hostel, organising nights out and on babysitting duty (looking after the hostel while everyone is out), and that they do all this on a cumulative months long hangover is even more impressive.

I know I’ve forgotten names (I think I forgot my own after some of the beer-fuelled evenings) so forgive me for anyone I’ve missed -
Kendoll, Rosiewiththeeyes, Anna, Leah, Aussie Dave (give the guy a big hug from me), Cosmo, Wedge, Meddler, Mitch, Seth, Cyclops (founder of Meow Mondays) - you are all INCREDIBLE. And I miss you with all the beating of my heart and the burning of my loins.

When I graduate if you need an in-hostel doctor (I think you do!) I’d be thrilled to apply for the position.

Carpe Noctem Vitae is one of the best hostels in Europe. It is friendly, informal and immense fun. A great hostel makes for a great experience in a city, bad hostels can truly ruin your view of a city. I've always loved Budapest, but the staff and guests at Carpe Noctem Vitae have now made it my favourite city in Europe. The hostel is warm, spacious, comfortable and clean, but it's the atmosphere generated by the staff and other guests that truly makes this one of the best hostels in Europe. From the moment i checked in, to the moment i checked out, staying at this hostel is one of my fondest memories of Europe. Love you all, see you soon.

I first found out about Carpe Noctem Vitae from some friends I met in Barcelona who recommended it. Upon arrival I was greeted with open arms from not only the staff... from well everyone. You see Vitae has this infectious disease called friendliness, in which even the biggest joy killer becomes the hostel version of Santa Claus. The staff are incredible warm and very knowledgeable, and for a place that prides itself on my two favourite things: partying and sleeping it defiantly ticks those boxers. There are plenty of awesome quirky things about the place as well. Lots of comfy couches, a free foosball table(make sure you learn the house rules), and a sex bed. The place is very comfortable and homey with lots to do during the day and night.
Budapest itself is one of the most amazing cities in the world and it is incredible cheap as well! I stayed in a lot of hostels during my travelling but this was by far the best hostel, the vibe of this place is second to none. There is an effect that every person that goes there is so amazing and you connect with lots of people in a very special way. It is this that also lures people in, I am talking of course about the Vitae trap. At first I was suppose to stay one night, that one night turned into the weekend, the weekend turned into a week and the week turned into 12 days. I was one of the lucky I got out early compared to some people, Vitae is so amazing that it makes it almost impossible to leave! This is the trap guests stay there so long that you’re not really sure who’s staff and who’s a long term guest. It is honestly my home away from home and thank you to so many of the staff/other guests for making my experience perfect leaving was one of the hardest things I did on my trip, and I’ve planned to come stay a lot longer in the future. My only hope is that everyone that goes to Budapest can experience Vitae, This is not a recommendation this is a must.
There are so many special people at Vitae that to shout out to them all would be a task worthy of a spectacular novelist, which I am not. I shall however endeavor to mention the extra special people, that I personally got to know pretty well. Ahh where to start, the beginning I think would be the best place. Cosmo, whose real name I can’t remember ahha, Cosmo is an a amazingly friendly guy who did a great check in and a okay foosball player I will beat him soon don’t worry, he was also the first to make me feel very welcomed into the hostel. Aussie Dave, mate if there someone you could talk to for hours about football it’s this guy, so much fun to be around always up for a laugh, constantly wears this hilarious red beanie and can do a very impressive strawpeedo, had an absolute blast with you. Maddy, I said people not staff at the start of these shout outs because it is each and every person that make this place what it is, you were hilarious and so much fun to be around miss you. Sammo! Buddy I owe you mate, 50 cent beers can be abit of trap but you sir defiantly saved me, ahah thank you so much for everything you are an awesome kind hearted person needs to be more of you in the world . Matty, I finally found an Aussie with a penguins love the same as mine , you were always amazing to talk to, caring, fun to be around and just generally the nicest guy ever, miss you so much man, saying goodbye hurt. Cyclops, if there was a heart and soul of Vitae it would be Cyclops, constantly making sure everyone is having a great time and constantly having a good time himself. You are an inspiration, as to how you can form such personal relationships with everyone you meet and the infectious happiness that comes with you. I wish I had never of beaten you at foosball I didn’t want to leave; you will never be forgotten bro. Last but certainly not least Kendall, Kendall you are defiantly a special kind of person. There is a happiness that just beams out of you and no matter what happens you are always there. You put up with a lot of my drunken bs, and for that I am very grateful. You are so much fun to be around and are one of the kindest souls. You made me feel welcomed and comfortable all you can really ask for in a hostel staff.
You see those were a few shout outs to the people I got to know very well. The thing is however the whole place is like that, everyone is friendly an amazing and the guests that it attracts are the same. This is not a recommendation this is a must stay!
Cheers Sam

loved every millisecond of my time there, loved the place, loved the staff, loved the people, loved the atmosphere and its just so easy to meet people and have a good time, theres something on every night if you want to party, but if you dont the place is quiet after 8:30 so you can get a good nights sleep too. Cant recomend it enough.

From the moment I checked in, two months into my travels, I knew I would never want to leave Vitae. Even at 2am in the morning, we were greeted with open arms and felt like part of the family. This hostel not only offers amazing, clean and comfortable rooms but a whole hostel experience, in a central location that I would highly recommend to anyone. There is so much on offer including several, comfortable and cosy common areas which make it so easy to meet amazing people, and a range of daily&nightly activities which you will not want to miss. The atmosphere is addictive, you will never want to leave. Lastly, the staff, easily a group of the most amazing people I have ever met. There was never a moment I couldn't count on them to give me directions, advice on where to eat/drink, book tours, or just to keep me company and have fun. They all became my family and best friends and constantly went out of their way to make sure everyone had a good time. Their hard work and dedication is constantly reflected through how well the hostel runs. If you want to met incredible people, and enjoy Budapest nightlife this definitely the place to stay. Without a doubt my favourite place and people in the world, the hardest thing I ever had to do was leave. Best three weeks of my life!!! I love you all xx tenaya
