Owner description: The Hospital in the Rock Nuclear Bunker Museum is a thrilling, unique and moving place. Visitors can learn about the WWII and the 1956 revolution as well as the Cold War in relation to this former TOP SECRET nuclear bunker. It had an important role during the war and it was classified until 2002 and opened as a museum in 2008. The place ensures a real time warp into the past. Mobiles are not working inside. Do not expect a regular museum. One hour long tour departs every hour in English. Guide books are available in several languages. Unforgettable experience underneath the Castle Hill. The entrance is only about 5 minutes walk from the famous Matthias-Church of Buda Castle.

I wanted to visit this museum because the Hilton Front Desk Supervisor, Laslo Csakvary, had been interviewed and mentioned this as a truly unique destination. It is hidden within the caverns below Castle Hill and served as an emergency clinic during World War II, then was transformed into a secret nuclear bunker in the Soveit era.

You will literally travel through time as you can view the original fixtures, medical equipment and the appropriately dressed wax figures in period uniforms and costumes.

Then have a wonderful lunch at the Baltazar restauarnt that is nearby.

Make sure you allow enough time to visit the Hospital in the Rock when you are exploring the Castle Hill area. This underground hospital is under the Buda Castle and was a functioning hospital during World War II right up until 2002. During the cold war it also functioned as a nuclear shelter. There are excellent wax figures depicting doctors, nurses and patients in the wards, operating theaters, clinics and other rooms in this extraordinary hospital. You can only go in a group tour which takes about 50 minutes and leaves every hour. The commentary is good and older children loved it. As a former health professional I would have liked a private tour at a more leisurely pace, but I was happy to have seen this amazing hospital.

This is definitely somewhere you should visit when in Budapest. Our english guide was very good and very informative and kept us all engaged. I took the local bus over the river to Buda and so i didn't have to walk up the steep hill to get unto to the castle area. The hospital is located behind the castle complex and is quite hard to find in my opinion. Although once you're on the the road 'Lovas Ut', the crowd of people surrounding a wall is the give away of its location.

In any case, it's a wonderful bit of Hungary's history and well worth visiting. Was a working hospital that was used during the second world war, and also during Russia's occupation of Hungary during the revolution. Pretty self explanatory, its a hospital with a cave system. Lots of rooms, lots of wax figures to show what it would have been like and a nuclear bunker. Bring ID if you're a medical student/doctor/nurse/teacher as you will get discount on entry which is handy. I forgot my medical student ID because i didn't know but they still offered me the discount.

Takes around an a hour for a complete visit.

Very very nice museum - you must go there because you cannot imagine how a hospital can work under the ground. The illustration is very real (yet not scary in any way) and the guides are very nice.
We loved it and recommend with all hurt.
