Owner description: The Hospital in the Rock Nuclear Bunker Museum is a thrilling, unique and moving place. Visitors can learn about the WWII and the 1956 revolution as well as the Cold War in relation to this former TOP SECRET nuclear bunker. It had an important role during the war and it was classified until 2002 and opened as a museum in 2008. The place ensures a real time warp into the past. Mobiles are not working inside. Do not expect a regular museum. One hour long tour departs every hour in English. Guide books are available in several languages. Unforgettable experience underneath the Castle Hill. The entrance is only about 5 minutes walk from the famous Matthias-Church of Buda Castle.

You don't see a site like this in all cities you visit! The history is well explained. It is a little difficult to find but ask and locals will instruct you how to find it.

“History on the quick.”
Reviewed September 3, 2013

The guide was very good. You get a pretty good history lesson of what happened during WWII and after when the hospital was turned into a nuclear bunker. Probably more interesting for medical types but history buffs would like too.

“Interesting museum”
Reviewed September 1, 2013

The Hospital in the Rock is an interesting museum. It shows the development of the hospital from inception, functioning during WW2 and the 1956 uprising, to its role as a nuclear bunker in the 1960's. There are hourly tours (departing in the hour) and these last around 60 mins. Annie, our guide, had excellent English and gave us and informative tour, highlighting the different roles played by this fascinating building. I was amazed at how much equipment had survived intact since WW2. If you like history to be tangible, then this is a great place to visit

“Dark and interesting history”
Reviewed September 1, 2013 via mobile

I throughly enjoyed this attraction and cannot understand the negative reviews.

The tours take place every hour, on the hour so make sure you arrive at the right time.

The tour began with a nine minute video, which was in Hungarian, and subtitled in English. We were then split into two groups, one for a Hungarian tour and one for an English speaking tour.

Our guide lead us through the caves and told us some very interesting facts and fascinating stories about the hospital and the secret nuclear bunker.

There were wax works of hospital staff and patients, some with amusing expressions, and original equipment and machinery from the hospital on display.

The tour lasted an hour and ten minutes. The tour was a little on the expensive side, but worth it. There is also a gift shop selling soft drinks, chocolate bars and a small selection of items including gas masks and medical tins, all of which are reasonably priced.
