We visit Budapest once a year and know a lot of good restaurants, but this time we wanted to discover a new place. Following the reviews by trip advisor members we went to 50 BAR for dinner although it is located in the "middle of nowhere". Unfortunately, this was the first time that the establishment did not meet the expectation raised by previous reviews. Maybe it was bad timing because the owner found convenient to go for holidays leaving an inadequate young waitress to run the business. As soon as we arrived she simply declared that she speaks no foreign languages and provided us with the menu card. No other way to communicate!!! The restaurant at 9pm was empty and the garden was not illuminated so we could view only the passing tram and hear the loud music!
The food was average, a bit salty to my taste and the lamb that my friends ordered was not cooked to their taste due to lack of communication!! The big surprise was kept for the end. When the bill came the waitress refused to take the credit card claiming that “the machine is broken”. This is an old waiter’s trick to get EUROS using a low exchange rate. As we didn’t have any cash with us we were embarrassed and my husband declared that either she would take our credit card or we live without paying. MIRACLE!! She immediately came back with “a working machine” and we paid our bill.
It is a pity that a restaurant with so promising website and good critics by other travelers does its best to ruin its reputation.
