“Very good but not incredible”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 1, 2013

While we had a perfectly good dinner at Borkonyha, it did not impress us as much as some of our other meals. The standouts were the soft goat cheese and the rolled farm chicken. I was underwhelmed with the rabbit as well as the desserts. I do like that there are so many Hungarian wines by the glass to sample. Plus the location was convenient to our hotel.

“Why does this place not have a Michelin Star?”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 29, 2013

The best food I have ever had...have eaten in a few Michelin Star restaurants and whilst they might have a few more 'touches' this was seriously the best food I have tasted. The cod in hazelnut crusted with spring salad and yellow carrots was sublime, and the basil ice-cream with sweet crumbs, dried carrots and apple essence tasted a good as it looked! Highly recommended! Fabulous waiter and gat wine too.

“Excellent food and wine”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 29, 2013

I really can't fault this place. I also have to say that Hungarian wine has been quite the revelation this weekend and the wine in Borkonyha was really delicious. A lovely, very flavoursome Sauvignon and a really rich full bodied red. We shared a starter - the scallop special which was super. Really good sized, fresh scallops, almost covered in a dukkah style spice mix. My cod with hazelnuts with carrots was faultless. Some of the best cooked fish I've eaten in a restaurant - I eat out a fair bit and getting fish this perfectly seasoned and cooked doesn't happen that often.

Dessert was also a hit. We went for the basil ice cream served with tiny acidic apple pieces, some lovely cruncy biscuity pieces, pistachios, some crisp carrots- it was the perfect combo of creaminess, sharpness, sweetness, softness, crunch. It was an amazing dessert. Good coffee too.

A great restaurant with good, friendly service.

“A totally delightful lunch”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 24, 2013

We had lunch here with six friends and were delighted. The Hungarian wines (like Furmint) were excellent. Starters included wonderful fish soup with coriander and crispy duck liver. My sea bream grilled with rosemary and the cod with hazelnut crust were delicious. Service, in fluent English, was friendly and professional, with spot-on recommendations for wines and food. We sat at a comfortable table outside on their quiet street - excellent for conversation. All-in-all a totally delightful lunch with good friends. The cost was right at $50 a person - a bit high for Budapest, but worth every dollar of it.

“Borkohyha Wine Kitchen”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 23, 2013

This was a very pleasant restaurant in a central location in Budapest. While we are not true wine buffs, we could appreciate the extent and quality of their offerings. The food was tasty, attractively served, and good value.
