“Disappointed!”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 8, 2011

If you are looking for an authentic B&B in Budapest, this is not the appropriate place for you. The Brody House is quite a nice building, but hosting guests is definitly a side business to the owners, helping financing art business.
Local staff cares about guests but they do not speak English and the situation is not very confortable, as they need to deal with everything in the house (cooking, cleaning, dealing with clients issues...).
We were very disappointed with our room, overpriced (small, no direct light from outside, no breakfast included) and with technical issues (our heater was broken). Out towels were not changed in 4 days and the room was not cleaned a lot.
I would not come back and not recommend the place. I have been to other guesthouses in Budpaest with a better value for money for the same budget and where I felt more welcomed as a guest.

Dear Elisa,

We are equally disappointed to have received our first poor review - your comments have been noted. We respond, for the benefit of other readers, as follows:

Hosting guests is certainly not a side business - this is the core of or activity for which we received recognition by The Sunday Times by being featured in its top 100 global list this autumn.

Art and creativity is part of the concept and experience; our guest enjoy this and often join events where they can meet artists and visit their studios. Sorry to hear that you did not appreciate this.

We are pleased to hear that our local staff care about guests - we pride ourselves on our staff's friendliness and willingess to help. We are surprised to hear that language was an issue - indeed, we have numerous fluent and/or native English speakers in our team – other languages (fluent/native) include: French, German, Swedish, Spanish and, of course, Hungarian.

Your room price for one of the smaller rooms (€60 per night for a couple effectively €30 per person) seems competitive within the local market. Breakfast is a full breakfast (eggs cooked to order, fruit, muesli, yoghurt and unlimited croissants, toast, jams, juice, coffee or tea - all for €10 per person) and is usually appreciated by guests. Sorry to hear you felt this was too expensive but we think you will struggle to find anything comparable for that price in the centre of town.

Cleaning, changing towels, heating issues come as a surprise particularly since we have an english-speaking concierge service from 8am to 8pm everyday - did you ask for assistance?

Regardless, we propose to offer you a complimentary night's accommodation should you return to Budapest at which point we will all we can to ensure your stay is more to your satisfaction.

Thank you for your feedback.

Best wishes,

Krisztina.

Great quiet place to stay, wonderful yin and yang atmosphere, superb rooms and front of house. Great to have such a relaxing club area on the second floor to relax. felt like home from home. Highly recommended, top location. Thank you guys.

Room Tip: we stayed in the new 2 bed apartment on the ground floor, plenty of space but steep stairs so be car...

A group of us stayed at Brody House for 4 days and this place is wonderful. Beautiful bedrooms and bathrooms; all very quirky. Very clean. Great breakfast. Good location a only a few minutes to the river, the synagogue. Near to metro station and easy travel throughout Budapest. We will definitely return to Brody House.

Brody House was truly excellent. The atmosphere was unlike any other "hotel" I have been to. The open nature of those staying and working at Brody House meant it was almost like spending a weekend with a large group of friends.
The location was also fantastic. A short walk from most of the key areas of the city to visit and close to a number of great restaurants.

All in all, Brody House is perfect for those looking for an intimate hotel experience.
Thank you very much!

My wife and I stayed in Budapest for three nights during the 2nd week of October 2011. I must say that after travelling to 5 countries and staying at various hostels and hotels during this trip, Fruszina handled our booking and was a great help and answered (the many) questions I had over numerous e-mails.

Brody House was definitely the highlight of any accommodation. We were greeted by Emily and were made to feel like extremely welcome guests. She showed us to our room and after a brief history of the building and what they're doing there, she walked us up to the club room to enjoy a drink and a brief tour. The place has an very warm and friendly vibe, catering to the needs of its guests in a way that's almost lost in the hospitality industry. The room itself, the Wilkinson room has a quirky loft area to sleep (very comfy bed) and uses its limited space extremely well to accommodate for any storage we needed. The bathroom was amazing - the best shower we had in Europe by far. The room was absolutely spotless and made up in a timely manner each day.

As for the location, it's perfectly close to main shopping areas and restaurants, it's a 10 minute walk to the Danube and very close to three subway stations (Astoria, Ferenciek Tare and Kalvin Ter). We enjoyed Budapest tremendously and were very pleased to have a home-base that was so close. I would highly recommend Brody House to anybody travelling to Budapest. We will definitely stay there again when we're again in Central Europe.

Thank you very much, Chris. We enjoyed having you both to stay and are thrilled to hear the end of your stay in Europe was so enjoyable. We hope you had a good journey back and we can tempt you back to Budapest again soon!

I live in Los Angeles, but visit Budapest every 3 or 4 months. I discovered Brody House September 2010 and it became my favorite and only place to stay when in Budapest. All the rooms are unique, named after artists that used to have their studios there and now have their work featured on the walls. My favorite ones are the Bullet, Claret, and Tinnei room. The owners and staff are very nice and helpful and the prices are very reasonable. The location is great, very close to the city center. Sometimes they have events in the evening that you are welcome to join. I met a lot of really cool and interesting people. There is something really special about Brody House and I can only suggest you experience it for yourself. One thing: if you can't handle stairs, it is not the right place for you...but then if you ask Peter or William, you might just get a piggyback ride from them :)
