“Hop on Hop Off”

This is a great service - pick the red because this gives you access to the yellow line as well and also includes a free river trip.

“Easy and relaxed way to see the main sites”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 7, 2013

Before this bus tour, I had never experienced the hop-on, hop-off busses. It's an easy way to see the lay of the land, and is a good primer for the rest of your stay where you can leisurely hop off when you see something you'd like to check out. Tour is about 2 full hours, where you listen via headsets to a set recording in your choice of around 20 languages. Best seats are on the top level, right in front where you have no one sitting in front of you. Those can be a bit hard to get though. Also noticed that some stops had loads of people, whom we overhead saying they had waited for a few busses and still couldn't get on as it was at full capacity. These stops were the ones by the New York Cafe. Our stop at 42 Andrassy was great as there was really no one there, so we had a choice of seats. In all, I think a strategic way to do this would be look at the times of day where most people would be getting on/off at certain stops ie - the New York Cafe stop was packed as it was the end of lunchtime, and everyone was getting back on. I would recommend this tour if you want a general look of the city and what sites it has to offer. The history via the headphones wasnt all that interesting, but was ok for this type of large tour.

“A good way to get some information and to most of the important sites.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 4, 2013

I always do the hop-on, hop off bus tour when available. I think this is a good way to get some basic and interesting information about key attractions. The tour in Budapest includes a boat tour which allows you to get to Margaret island. The hop-on, hop-off tour in Budapest gives you 48hours to use the bus which is really good for getting to the major attractions and exploring each. If the weather is not great then it could be a bit uncomfortable if you are on the top deck and it's the uncovered bus.
With the hotel discount the cost was 4000 Forints which is less than 20USD, a great deal in my mind, especially compared to the cost in other cities I done the trip in.

“OK, but not to be relied on”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 2, 2013

This was not the most reliable transport we experienced on our holiday, but we did manage to get to most of the places we wanted to. You can have a boat trip up and down the Danube as part of the hop-on/hop-off tour, but the boat stopped before we thought it was going to on the other side of the river, as there was a break between the day and evening trips (this wasn't clear from the timetable - it seemed to end a stop too early). It was also sometimes a matter of luck whether you got on a bus when you wanted to, as they would be full, or cancelled due to some civilian protest in the city (which we realise isn't the bus operator's fault, but didn't help us get value from our tickets). We would certainly take more time to research the options beforehand, as it seemed quite expensive for what you get.

“Great way to see Budapest!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 31, 2013

My husband and I just finished our two day Giraffe hop on hop off tour (march 30-31). The cost was 5000 HF but we got 20 percent off from our hotel. We quite enjoyed the experience! It was such a great and convenient way to see all the highlights in Budapest!

My thoughts in a nutshell:
Pros:
- there were a few staff at each stop to answer all your questions and to let u know if the buses were running on time. They all spoke English as well
- there was someone calling stops and connecting buses
- the ticket was good for unlimited use of the red and yellow line and one boat ride
- the information and history was interesting
- we always got on the bus we lined up for, we were never turned away because of an overcrowded bus

Cons:
- the buses have seen better days, they are a much older fleet
- they have recycled headsets which we thought were disgusting! Fortunately we kept our pair from our hop on hop off tour from Berlin
- the red line runs every half and hour and the yellow line runs every hour so don't be late!
