“Good service,disappointing food....”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 26, 2013 via mobile

Never had such good service - that part was perfection. The restaurant is really lovely and well laid out. The food, however, was a disappointment. The main course bland and the portions even by Budapest standard were really small. I would not go back. At this price point, there are much better options in Budapest.

“Perfect place”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 22, 2013

We booked this place thinking about my friend bday. Lovely idea, and the staff was super helpful. The food was amazing, both in taste and in design. The place has a great atmosphere, cool but not too fancy, just right!
What was also good we were able to have dinner at 10pm, as we arrived late to Bupapest.
Thanks to the staff for making our evening.

“Brilliant, would go again for sure!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 21, 2013

What a great little restaurant ... whilst we were staying in Budapest we found this lovely restaurant in the centre of the city. It doesn't seem like much from the outside but once you go in it's a real aladdin's cave of food treasures. The staff are exsceptionally friendly and professional. They appeared very interested in us and making sure we had a great experience. With regards to the menu, it's not very extensive, however, they have clearly taken the time to source local ingredients (in season) and offer a number of quality dishes - rather than offer 20 or 30 courses at an average level! I can highly recommend the scallops and prawn starters, whilst the cod main was absultely delightful. Although there are only about 3 or 4 dishes per section, there should be something from everyone but try something new, I don't think you'd be disappointed. The wine was excellent too and the oung lady really helped recommend some lovely wines based on what we had chosen for main. I could go on about this place for ages, but the only thing I can say is go and try it for yourselves ... you won't be disappointed.

“Wow, Wow, What a Place!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 19, 2013

Not expecting much we walked into this charming place, we were the only guests in the entire bistro (the name does not do it justice, it is much more than a bistro) and promptly got a seat on the soft bench in the back.

We received a gift from the kitchen (all others did to as the place was quickly filling up) which was a small piece of tongue with a spicy touch of paprika and a glass of soup stock, interesting presentation and a bit humorous considering the size of the tongue on the little spoon. (See photo)

We ordered the scallops with fig for an appetizer, wonderfully presented and tasty, we had received 3 different kinds of bread before this came to the table, very tasty. (See photo)

The menu is apparently changed daily or weekly so there are only 4 main courses but all very interesting. I ordered the Cod with pumpkin and chestnuts, very curious I must admit! My Finance ordered the Veal with ragout and veggies. (See photo)

The service and suggestions were excellent, all staff spoke English and were so very helpful and smiling, truly a surprise in Budapest.

We then ordered each desert: I ordered the pistachio cream with sour cherry sorbet, my Fiancee ordered the poppy seed flan with lemon sorbet, again, wonderful presentation and simply delicious! (Photos below)

We ordered the check and with it they brought 4 home made pralines, delightful! No photos, they disappeared to quickly!

I have not seen such an operation with such food in Budapest, typically one has the food but bad service, this place is delightfully decorated with old brick arched ceilings, a huge wine cooler in the rear acting as a wall but in use and very clean.

We will be back, I woudl suggest making reservations, everyone who came in after us stated they had reservations. After an hour we left (we eat quickly) and the Bistro was full.

A true surprise in Budapest, or any other city for that matter, if you can you should really take the time to go and ask for Norbert, he was one of our waiters, a truly pleasant person with specific knowledge that may interest some of you.

Enjoy!

“Eccellente!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 18, 2013

Me and my wife were in the beautiful capital of Hungary last year and we still remember the Mak Bistro as the best culinar experience in the city. Located in the center, in a quiet street, catched our attention thanks to the menu outside more than what we could see through the windows. It looks a little bit rustic from outside, almost like a dining fast food place. Once we decided to enter everything changed. The staff is extremely professional and friendly, welcomes you and offers you a great sparkling prosecco as aperitif on the house.
The menu is fantastic, short like one should be to get the best fresh vibrant food possible. But it's true that the choice for vegetarians is quite limited, fortunately not so big problem for us, because we eat at least fish. Food is like you see in the pictures, plus it has a great rich taste. It's for nouvelle cuisine lovers, so don't come here to seek for a huge steak or mashed potatoes. I had a cold soup where there actually was something like apple water, sea scallop and boiled or sauteèd radish!! Also desserts are great... About wines, just ask for a local white wine from the staff, don't be afraid of telling your wine budget, they just don't judge! And wines may cost also 80 euros... Anyway, it's the perfect place in Budapest, we also have visited Costes (also excellent), but only in MAK is the real atmosphere!! Just excellent!
