This place is near the Synagogue. Just follow the street to the left and you bump right into it. No frills place on 2 floors but great food and great price. We ate better here than in the tourist center and for 1/4 the price. This is where the locals eat. It is alway busy but we never needed a reservation. Go there.

The personal reason for rating this restaurant so highly is because it was exactly what we were looking for. Seeing as we were already staying in a posh 5-star hotel, we were wanting to go to a much more simple restaurant for some reasonably priced good home-style Hungarian food and the Blue Rose (Kek Rosza) came recommended by our tour guide on the Free City Walking Tour we went on earlier that day.

Located at 1077 Budapest, Wesselényi utca 9, we found it relatively easy to find and walked there from our hotel - we were staying at the Corinthina Hotel, only about a 10 minute walk away.

We went pretty late in the evening (it's open until 10pm) so it was pretty quiet, however it is apparently a popular choice amongst locals and gets very busy for lunch (the Hungarians tend to eat their bigger meal much earlier on in the day). The restaurant is very simple, it has more of a cafe style feel to it, however, we were very warmly welcomed and felt very comfortable.

The menu is pretty big so there is plenty to choose from. My partner and I both ordered the same, a bowl of Hungarian Goulash Soup, well it was a cup actually - you could order a cup or a bowl depending on what size portion you wanted and seeing as this was our starter we went for the cup. The Goulash soup came with a spicy paprika relish and bread and was very yummy indeed. For our main course we both ordered the Chicken Paprikash with dumplings and a winter salad to share, which was pickled gherkin, cabbage, beetroot and pepper. Again, the food was simple but delicious and after both a decent sized portion for the starter and the main, we simply didn't have room for dessert, plus we'd also drank a bottle of the Hungarian House Red Wine with our meal as well.

One tip - make sure you read the menu properly as all main dishes come without sides or salads, so if you want a side dish or a salad with your meal, make sure you order this in addition to your main. This isn't a huge problem because some people don't like sides with their dinner, plus it's so cheap that it doesn't cost you a huge amount to order a side/salad etc.

A big positive was the fact that the bill only came to 6,500 HUF in total, which is just over £20 - very cheap when you take in to account that the two of us both had starters and main courses and shared a bottle of wine! Suffice to say, we left a pretty generous tip which they rather sweetly went to give us change for until we made it clear that it was a tip! They were very nice to us when we left and gave us a 10% discount card for our next visit. Sadly, due to our short stay in Budapest, we didn't get time to go back.

So, if you want simple but tasty food and a true taste of Hungary with no frills, we'd definitely recommend the Blue Rose - good food and very cheap.

Blue Rose Restaurant/Kek Rozsa .This little gem was reccomended in the Thomas Cook Budapest Travellers guide we bought prior to our trip (15thFeb10-19thFeb10)
Take the tube to Astoria & head for the Synagog & its a little way up the street behind it. Small charming, informal, chef has a penchance for 'football shirt' decor on the walls, flat sreen tv on walls broadcasting some abismal hungarian chat show! last orders are bout 9pm. We arrived 8ish, scanned the menu board outside & liked the look of the 'Winter menu'
soup/stew starter, main & ice cream afters all for about 2000HUF. Food was outstanding, service friendly, & service quick. sadly the unidentifiable erroneous 2500HUF charge was a disapointment!!
However cheap authentic hungarian food & total bill including beers was 'tuppence-nothin' as the terribly british saying goes! all round cheap, nice meal, watch out for the 'added extra' on the bill, shout about if you like, but is it worth it for a few quid?,all in all i'd recommend it!
