“Excellent first dinner in Budapest”
Reviewed September 15, 2013

We had booked a table on-line in advance of our arrival in Budapest. The booking was dealt with efficiently and email confirmation was received quickly. On arrival at the restaurant, we were expected and seated promptly at a reserved table. The food was delicious, well-cooked and presented. The waiter was helpful with the wine choice and all the staff were pleasant and spoke good english.

“Great bargain”
Reviewed September 10, 2013

If you are looking for a good three course lunch with no frills and don't want to pay a fortune then go to Ruben on a weekday. The set menu is usually interesting and judging by the numbers seated, very popular. We didn't find it a place to linger but at 890 forints plus 10% service charge, we didn't expect to be pampered.

We have eaten a la carte here in the past and that is excellent.

I would love to be able to comment on the food, service etc of this restaurant. I don't submit poor reviews lightly but this restaurant has an online booking system which clearly does not function consistently well. We made a reservation for a table and received a message on the screen to say we would receive a confirmation by email. You can guess the rest, after waiting until nearly our reservation time we ended up trying to find somewhere else to eat at short notice due to no communication from the restaurant. If a restaurant accepts online bookings through its own booking tool, then they have a responsibility to communicate with the customer. I'm sure the food is great, but the communication isn't.

“Great food, great price”
Reviewed August 6, 2013

We ate at Ruben at the suggestion of an acquaintance who was staying nearby. We were immediately impressed with the atmosphere, which would have felt at place in a trendy New York bar. It was very modern and trendy.

The wine list was extensive but with the heat wave in Budapest, we opted for some of the draft beer.

The menu was quite extensive, with a combination of traditional Hungarian dishes and more modern international cuisine. We opted for two of the more traditional ones as well as the Hungarian goulash. The goulash was well made with a good flavor and spice profile. It wasn't the best goulash we had in Budapest, but it was up there. I could have used some pepper flakes to bring up the spiciness level though.

The venison stew was quite good and the venison really stood out. The potatoes on the side were also quite good. They were seasoned with paprika (of course) and were delectable. The pork knuckle was also quite good, though not as crispy as German versions. The meat was super moist and flavorful. The potatoes on the side here were also good, also with paprika, but somehow different. The onions really brought them to life.

Service was also very good. Staff was friendly and spoke great english. Everything was brought out quickly though we did have a hard time flagging our waiter down to get the check as a big group came in and he disappeared.
