What a pity. The food here was really good. The service on the other hand......
We are doing things differently on this trip. When we are out and about, we pull out the Tripadvisor app, and look for the best starred restaurant nearby. Technology is amazing! For a well managed restaurant, an app like this can be far better advertising than any billboard, paid ad on a tourist map, or pretty young lady trying to hand out menus on the street. And, it's free. Restauranteurs are going to have to recognize this, and pay attention to what people are saying. You can make it work to your advantage, or you can let it drag you down.
I understand that restaurant life is at a slower pace in Europe than in the USA, where we eat and run. However, we ate at a fabulous restaurant two nights ago: an elaborate dinner clearly made from scratch, violin entertainment, and great sidewalk people-watching, and spent two hours enjoying ourselves. Our dinner was on the table in about 45 minutes. No worries It was a slow-cooked dream dinner, and we lingered.
Unfortunately, here it took nearly an hour at Trattoria Mama to get a pizza and a salad to split. We watched a couple throwing pained looks at waiters, who didn't come to take their orders, and watched another couple try for almost half an hour to attract someone's attention so they could pay and leave.
It took so long to receive our dinner, that we debated paying for our drinks and leaving, and then so long again to receive our check, that we debated simply walking away without paying our tab, jokingly betting that we could outrun the sloooow waiters.
Our pizza was very good. Our salad was very fresh. But would we come back again? Would we spend an hour and a half of our previous vacation time sitting here suffering from lack of attention, or would we rather allocate 30, 45 minutes of that to walking a couple of blocks and enjoying the lights along the Danube?
I often bake pizza from scratch at home, and can let my yeast rise, pre-bake my shell, and still have dinner on the table faster than this place did.
I really try to be fair and thoughtful with reviews, and not flippantly hand out poor or mediocre ones. We would go back to any of the other restaurants we visited on this trip, and would recommend them to others. I would have given this one a five star rating, but the slow, inattentive service just killed the experience. Lesson learned: In the future, when other TA users have complained about slow service, we will pay attention.
