“Gorgeous hostel, amazing location!”
Reviewed January 26, 2014

This hostel was just lovely! The location is amazing, right across from the National Museum and near two different metro stops, surrounded by heaps of amazing (and well priced) restaurants, just around the corner from the main market hall and easy walking distance to the Jewish Quarter, 'ruin' bars, St Stephen's church etc.

At first, this doesn't look like your average hostel as it housed inside a gorgeous, historic building. There's no lift (as it's a protected building) so the 3 flights are a bit of a work-out but totally manageable. The hostel itself is warm, cosy and beautifully decorated with wall-murals and eclectic furniture. On arrival, we were greeted by Emma (I think her name was Emma? Anyway, she was lovely!), who sat us down with some wine and marked a whole heap of restaurants, cool bars and vintage stores and all the major tourist spots on our map. We'd never experienced such friendly, helpful hostel staff and it really made a huge difference to our stay to be so warmly welcomed and have so many places to eat and visit recommended to us. The hostel also puts on a weekly dinner party for guests, which we unfortunately missed, but if you're staying over the weekend that's definitely something to look forward to.

Our room was beautiful - large and spacious with super high ceilings and a view of the museum. It had a basic kitchen with a microwave and fridge, which was great for breakfasts, and the bathroom was large, clean and had a huge shower with plenty of hot water.

And the price was just fantastic! After arriving from Paris, we were amazed at not only the value of this hostel but also of Budapest as a whole.

If you're looking for a typical 'party hostel' or maybe more of a hotel-hostel, this place might not be for you. But if you're looking for something a little more chilled and homely, Lavender Circus is a MUST!

We do not travel a lot, but this place was the best hostel we have seen so far. This was our first time in Budapest and staff helped us a lot, they were very friendly and generous. There was even an after dinner party and we have met great people in there.

Building is a little creepy at first sight, but our room was very large, had its own bathroom and kitchen (double private) and it was super cheap compared to Nordic countries (I can only compare with them).

Only negative thing I can say is that beds weren't comfortable. It hasn't been an issue for us though. Stayed only 2 days.

Lovely hostel located in a beautiful building. Loved the interior, very well decorated with a quirky and homely vibe. Not your typical party hostel, which is exactly what we were after as a couple travelling. You still get the opportunity to meet other travellers in the cosy lounge area but also very quiet at night. One of the cleanest hostels I have been too and the staff were so kind, helpful and accommodating - one of the girls offered us wine on arrival and gave us many recommendations for cafes, restaurants etc. (The ones we did try were amazing). All and all a great experience at Lavender Circus and excellent value for money.

Stayed here four days. The receptionists were extremely helpful, and very knowledgeable about their city. They recommended several places to eat off the tourist trail and all were perfect. Rooms are great, decorated by the artist owner. Each one is unique. The only problem in mine was the lights were very dim and hard to read by. The hostel is at the top of a beautiful old building, with no lift, so be aware if you have any mobility difficulties. The common area is gorgeously decorated with what I'd guess are flea market finds, and there's free tea and coffee. Although there's no breakfast, the staff pointed me in the direction of some excellent cafes every morning. It's very close to major sights, and has a metro station nearby. Easy if you're arriving at Keleti train station. Will definitely stay here again, it's my new favourite hostel in Europe.

Possibly the nicest hostel I've ever stayed in. Very handy and easy to find/direct taxis to when drunk as it's directly opposite the National Museum. Our room was huge and fabulously done out, as is the whole hostel - a massive old building with lots of quirky knick knacks and I wanted to steal ALL the amazing lampshades!!! In spite of that, the thing that really makes this hostel so outstanding (I'm repeating what other reviewers have said,I know) is the AMAZING staff. Really lovely, interesting, helpful, friendly and well travelled people, who have stayed in many a hostel and are passionate about making guests feeling as at home as possible. They are very knowledgeable about the city itself and have some great recommendations of what to do and see, and can book you tickets for various things (they arranged an evening at the thermal baths for us - this is definitely a MUST if you're in Budapest!). Free wine/palinka on arrival and delicious strong coffee whenever you ask for it. The steps up to the hostel aren't for the faint hearted (it's on the 5th floor) but this is definitely a small price to pay!
Thank you so much everyone at Lavender Circus for making our stay in Budapest one to remember!

Lavender Circus is a unique hostel that has a quirky Art Deco feel and a sincere focus on providing customer service to their guests. I ended up in two rooms different rooms, both were excellent and very comfortable. The hostel has a few nice touches that make staying there like home, including complimentary coffee (the good stuff) and tea, milk plus alcoholic drinks, and laundry service. The staff are very helpful, though I was annoyed that I had I was told there was no availability during for one night in e middle of my stay and had to go elsewhere, only to find out that a room was available for that night and I wasn't given the opportunity to stay, even though I kept asking...then it was too late the room had been booked by someone else. Despite this the hostel is a great place to stay, very secure, great location and friendly staff.

Room Tip: Ring and book instead of emailing.
