“Quirky hotel in great city”
Reviewed November 6, 2013

We stayed for 3 nights in this quirky little hotel which is on a back street in a really convenient location, within easy walking distance of many of the wonderful attractions in this lovely city, and very near the tram, metro and bus stops. Our en-suite room, which was at the back of the hotel was comfortable and surprisingly quiet. The bed was very comfortable - although we were surprised to find we had two single duvets, rather than a double/kingsize one, but actually think that was probably the norm as when we enquired it transpired they didn't have larger one. It wasn't a major issue - just took a little adjusting to initially! You do need to take shampoo, etc, although there is nice-smelling liquid soap in the shower and on the basin. We thought the breakfast was fine - lovely fresh bread, small pastries, fresh fruit, etc. Staff were pleasant, and the guy on reception when we arrived was really helpful in recommending a great place to eat which was really near and which we would never have discovered without his help. We had an enjoyable stay - although to be honest, there was so much to see and do in this lovely city that the time we spent in the hotel was pretty minimal.

Soho Hotel is really close to the city centre. Is approximately 10 minutes on foot from the Jewish Triangle. The surroundings are full of bars and restaurants. We had the feeling that the area was safe for foreigners even if it was for late at night. Metro station (Blaha Lujza Ter) is just 200 metres away. A super market is next to the metro station and a bakery is just outside the hotel. The hotel itself is really great. Decoration is very modern, one of the best decorated rooms i' ve ever stayied. Rooms are small but cosy and very warm. The glass between the shower and the bedroom was a very smart and unique idea. Breakfast is also very good. Big variety of sweet croissants and marmelades, and even bigger in sausages, salami and salads. Staff is very friendly and helpful in every way they can. Wi-fi is free and works in every single room. Last but not least was the price. WIth 55€ per room per night (after contacting straight with the hotel) was a really value for money choice.

Room Tip: I think all rooms are same

The reception and bar area at the entry look great but the decor in the room didn't come up to the same standard, and the dining area certainly didn't. The room was clean but small. I had a 'double room for singles' with 2 small single beds. Why not (like the lovely Levante Parliament hotel in Vienna) just have a single bed? It would be too small to have two people in there, so what's the point?
The air-conditioner didn't work properly so I was often freezing in the room particularly when I sat at the desk on my laptop, near the window. After several phone calls one day, it appeared to be better (perhaps I'd just acclimatised - and I'd put on more clothes, such as my woollen scarf!), but continued to blow cold air after that. No one ever checked my room, but just told me the maintenance man had turned the hotel heating up. I did think it was frequently quite cool in the public areas too. And the heater in the bathroom didn't work AT ALL.
There are no frills in bathroom - no shampoo, conditioner or body lotion.
Breakfast is ordinary. There are three sugar-filled cereals on offer (no muesli), and 6 bain-marie dishes which were the same every day. When you're staying a week, it is extremely boring, and not particularly inviting anyway. One morning the scrambled eggs, and the roast pumpkin were almost cold. The fruit and pastries were not fresh every day either. The coffee machine makes ordinary coffee, but the bar in reception area has a coffee machine (I didn't realise that until my 2nd last day, so don't know what it is like)
The reception staff are efficient and pleasant, but only spoke if you addressed them first - how simple is an "hello? good morning?" The housekeeping staff were delightful.
The mini bar had an ordinary selection, and wasn't always replenished properly.
Although it was a non-smoking room I frequently smelt smoke from smokers on the steel walkways outside and occasionally in the passageway.
Once again, housekeeping changed my towels everyday regardless of me hanging them up...this seems to be international downfall in hotel management. Come on guys, lift your game and stop wasting water and electricity.

Dear flitzaround,
I would like to thank you for writing a review, it is important for us. During your stay the weather was so fine and warm, some of the guests were missing the cooling in the room, the other guests asked about the heating. It is always difficult to find the optimal way of the heating/air conditon, I am sorry for the inconveniences and I hope your next stay will be better.
Best regards,
Istvan Tozser

We've stay in the soho hotel for 3 nights. It is a lovely hotel in a great location, close to the metro station and a 10 minute walk from the main attractions, and more important, at night, the surrounding is coming to life and you can find great bars, restaurants and nice places to sit and drink Hungarian beer. Welcoming and helpful staff, great breakfast, nice room in a decent size.

Me and my wife stayed in Soho for two nights, and we really enjoyed our stay. The position of the hotel couldn't be better, its close to everything worth visiting in Buda. You can go everywhere on foot and it is so convenient. As for the hotel itself, it has cute little rooms (small but comfy), you have no view or balcony but it is normal for a hotel in the center of the city so its nothing to complain about. You have parking option for a small fee, free wifi in rooms and breakfast was fairly nice- The staff is very helpfull and nice. All in all great experience.

We visited Budapest last week to celebrate my wife's half century and stayed at the Soho. Like other reviewers, we found the room small but not unduly so, and we were offered a junior suite for an extra €25 a day but declined as we had no intention of doing little more than sleeping in the room. Our room was at the back of the hotel so not too noisy but we could hear the frequent wailing of sirens. The bed had a duvet which was too hot so we took it out and used the blanket provided but had to ask for a second one as the other was too small. The shower room was also tiny but big enough and the powerful shower was a joy. We only had breakfast once and it was more than adequate with a good selection of hot and cold buffet dishes. The staff on the front desk could not have been more helpful or accommodating. The hotel is quite conveniently located near a stop on the green Hop-On, Hop-Off bus route which we found to be extremely useful to get to the sites we wanted to see. It's also close to the M2 metro and trams go nearby. It's a longish walk to the city centre (about 25 minutes). There are some excellent restaurants and bistros around.

Room Tip: Try for the B staircase at the rear of the hotel.

Dear PaphosBricks,
I would like to say thank you for your honest review about our hotel. I am happy that you liked our breakfast even if you had breakfast just once. Thank you for pointing out the staff on the front desk as well. Hope to see you again.

Just back from a midweek break in Budapest. Weather lovely for the time of year. EU and World Heritage Fund money beginning to show in the centre of the city and on the River Danube and Budapest Castle areas. The Soho Boutique Hotel was advertised as a 4 star hotel but is in my opinion only just short of a 3 star.
That said, the rooms were small but comfortable, the breakfast was good with a few choices to start the day. A decent base considering most people spend most of their time out in the city. The hotel is in a rundown area about ten to fifteen minutes walk from the city centre. There are a number of bars and restaurants in the vicinity that are popular with the locals. I used the Italian restaurant near the Zara hotel and thoroughly enjoyed it.
