“Very moving”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 2, 2013

These are not publicised anywhere. We stumbled upon them by accident whilst walking along the Danube to the parliament building. They are a line of 100 shoes (cast in bronze?) of jews who had been lined up on the banks of the Danube, told to remove their shoes, then shot and pushed into the river. It is a very moving memorial to them and worth seeking out.

“definitely something to see”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 2, 2013

This monument to those slain and thrown into the Danube is a must-see. Unfortunately it is difficult to get to; it is about 200 meters south of the Parliament building but there is a lot of construction near the building and can be tricky crossing the road. If you head straight for the river from St Stephen's Cathedral, go along the dirt path beside the river heading north and you will find them. What a poignant reminder of the tragedy -- it left us speechless.

“Poignant”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 2, 2013

It was not easy to locate but it is on the Parliament (Pest) side of the river and just a little north. It was a cold day when we went and the thought of these people shot into the freezing cold river late at night was a reminder of how evil people can be.

It was a moving experience to see the replicas of the shoes that were worn by men, woman and children who were executed on the Danube River.

“Shoes along the Danube”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 31, 2013

An immensely moving memorial in its starkness and simplicity, yet so evocative of the horrors visited upon the Jews on Hungary in 1944. A must see while visiting Budapest to glimpse some of the shadows of the complicated history lingering here. It is viscerally gripping and emotionally overwhelming.
