“Thought Provoking”

Simple but certainly makes you think about what happened here. Find it just by the parliament buildings. It's not signposted.

“Shocking yet stunning memorial that shouldn't be missed”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 6, 2013

Shoes on the Danube is an excellent and very shocking memorial honouring the Jews killed during WW2. There is more info on wikipedia regarding the history of this memorial: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shoes_on_the_Danube_Promenade

I would recommend a visit as it's a beautiful memorial and there is a lot of detail. The memorial can be found on the edge of the Danube near Steindl Imre Utca which is not far north from the Szechenyi bridge - you can actually take a tram and hop off and cross the road and wander down to the edge of the river. Plus it's free!

“I had a tear in my eye”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 3, 2013

This is quite difficult to get access to, you have to cross a very busy road or take a lengthy walk to an appropriate crossing. If you need help walking or are slow on your feet it might be worth taking a taxi.

I am not Jewish, I was born after WW2 and I know Budapest very well. But to me this is the most moving monument in this fine city to victims of the Holocaust. In this case it commemorates those who were slaughtered at the hands of the Arrow Cross (the Hungarian Fascist movement) towards the end of WW2. They simply lined the people up on the bridges, forced them to strip, shot them and let the Danube carry the bodies, dead and alive, away. The majority were Jewish women and children, the men having been conscripted to work as slaves to aid the Nazi war effort. The reason why they were not taken to the camps were because at the ending of the war there were no trains to transport them. Ironically after the war the Communists recruited many members of the Arrow Cross into their state security apparatus and other roles though some were prosecuted and executed for war crimes.

I must admit, knowing the story beforehand, I was moved to tears when i saw the shoes.

Bleak weather and works at the neighbouring Parliament building did not improve it, but worth a visit if nearby. Shame there were no obvious explanatory plaques.
