This was a 'must see' though very upsetting place to visit. Having read all about the history behind the significance of the shoes it made one realise how badly treated the Jews were. What a cruel world we live in.

There is no easy access to this site from the Parliament as there is a no pedestrian access fence and construction happening along the river bank. You need to walk along a road and then take your life in your hands to cross the road and there's no crosswalk. Or you can approach the site from the bridge and walk toward Parliament along the river.

It is worth the long walk. I really was touched to realized this is where innocent people were shot and fell into the Danube. It is a sad legacy to be sure.

This sight is very poignant, striking in its simplicity and a very touching memorial. We visited the sight both in the daytime and at night, when lots of the candles were lit, which added to the sad setting. It is not difficult to find - it is almost directly in front of the Parliament Building - but you do need to take care in crossing a very busy road junction, with no obvious pedestrian crossing on view. We did not see any notices in English at the sight, but if you have done your homework in advance, you will understand completely what the memorial represent.

This site can be viewed on the edge of the Danube just a little bit removed from the Parliament building. Can be seen when driving by if you can not stop for a clear look. Such a sad vision of mostly women and children' shoes left behind when shot and thrown into the river.
