“Great small hotel”
Reviewed February 3, 2009

Hotel was perfect for what we wanted, great location and affordable. We only stayed the one night, but there was nothing we weren't happy with.

Hotel is small, which I preferred, clean and new. Staff were helpful and friendly - we had no troubles with our booking or our room.

It is difficult to find, and the directions could be more detailed, but I was aware before we went that it was in an apartment/courtyard complex so once we found the building (which wasn't hard thanks to the big ford sign on the top) it was just finding how to get in. TIP: If you are at the front of the building turn and walk down the right hand side (the side the main street is) and after a few doors you will find a gate and a host of plaques on the wall. Enter code 102 to get through to reception and they will buzz you in if the gate is locked. Walk through to the lift and get off on level 1 and there are signs pointing you in the right direction.

Continental breakfast was adequate and brought to your room which made for a nice change, and they give you a good range of times to choose when you would like it delivered.

If your room is on the street side, it can be a bit noisy (but nothing above city street noise) so if that would bother you too much then request a room on the other side.

This was a charming little hotel. It was difficult to find, but it was a sort of adventure finding it. Because of the reviews, I was aware there were difficulties in finding it, and someone mentioned it was on the first floor - so using our common sense - we found it. The taxi knew right were the building was, just had to navigate within the building. We laughed about it. But arriving, we found happy, friendly staff - and a very clean and functional room, with more tv channels in English than more expensive hotels. The bed linens were nice, not the cheap polyester found in many hotels. The breakfast was continental style - if you require more, you can go out and get it. When staying in more expensive hotels, we found breakfast too much - more than could eat, and not great quality. This was fine, all you need to start you on your day out in Budapest. The location was amazing. Close to everywhere. Everything within walking distance. And did I mention the staff? They were charming, friendly and happy - something that is not always the case in Budapest. It made the stay even better. Would recommend it to my mother, and she is very fussy.

I highly recommend this hotel to travelers from all over, any age, with any interest. Not only was it extremely affordable but the staff was kind, welcoming, and incredibly helpful with tips on where to eat, what to do, and all transportation questions. The rooms are comfortable, clean, endearing, and make one feel at home after a long day of walking around Budapest. Breakfast (delivered to your room!) was an added bonus, but truly, I would recommend this hotel more than any other!

We stayed at the Karoly Central over the Holidays. The hotel is centrally located, quiet and clean. The staff was always very friendly and helpful, and the room was perfect for the stay.
Good Value for the Money. I would go back any time.
The only critic we have that it is tricky to find. When you enter the building, use the stairs on the left side to get to the red elevator. Go to the first floor, then you will find it.

Entrance a little difficult to find, as hotel is in a large building that shares its entrance with offices and apartments. Once inside was pleasantly surprised, newly decorated and was very clean and warm.

Staff were very pleasant, and nothing was too much trouble, complimentary bottle of wine in room. Breakfast served in room as there was no dining area. This was quite nice however as it made for a less rushed morning. Tea and coffee always available, just had to ask and the staff would get it for you.

Ideally placed as metro near, also in walking distance to many attractions and good restaurants.

Would definitely stay here again.

We stayed here for 4 nights from Dec.8th. Had no difficulty finding the hotel as the directions provided were accurate. However we arrived at 9pm and asked at reception for a recommended restaurant and were given directions to Matya's Pince. This was quite a distance away but we found it and were really dissapointed at the quality of the food and while the musicians were entertaining they were very persistant in trying to sell us their CD. However the real shock was the bill.65 Euro for 2 main courses and a mediocre bottle of wine! Next day we discovered this restaurant was part of the same chain as the Karoly Central! so that explains why we were directed there. We discovered one of the best little restaurants we have found anywhere in Europe and it was within 5minutes walk of the Karoly! This is "Ruben" on Magyar Utca. The hotel staff were otherwise friendly and helpful but DO Not seek advice on restaurants!!

Dear Reviewer,
Thank you for taking time to provide a review your stay at the Budapest Karoly Central hotel.
Our staff pays great attention to give the best recommendations which meet guests’ satisfaction.
The mentioned restaurant (named after Mátyás, the most honorable king of the country’s history) is one of the most famous restaurants of the capital, offering Hungarian cuisine with traditional Hungarian hospitality and live folk music.
After receiving many positive feedbacks from our guests we were encouraged to recommend that restaurant, this was the first time when it did not meet the needs of the guest.
Budapest Karoly Central hotel is part of the Central Budapest Hotels chain and the Mátyás Pince Restaurant belongs to an entirely different hotel group with absolutely no connection to our hotel. We would never send guests to a place that did not have a good reputation and we find it strange to have been accused of just trying to earn extra money. Once again, we have absolutely no connection or financial interest whatsoever in this restaurant nor do we receive commissions for sending guests there. We are sorry if your experience there was not good and we will note this for future suggestions.
As the location of our hotel is very favourable - right in the heart of the city center- there are several other restaurants nearby which are being suggested by our staff as well.
We appreciate your time, your opininon is important to us! We are all looking forward to welcome you again!
Wishing you a Happy New Year!

My boyfriend and I stayed at this hotel at the end of November 2008. It is a very well located hotel, within walking distance of all the main Budapest attractions.

It is a family run hotel with friendly staff. We were welcomed with a free bottle of Hungarian wine, which was a nice gesture.

It is modern, having only opened in May 2008, with nice decor and good ensuite facilities. The rooms have large windows, high ceilings and period features. There are only a few rooms in the hotel so there aren't any communal areas i.e. no bar, breakfast room, restaurant. Breakfast is served in your room so you get to enjoy breakfast in bed.

There were a few downsides for me. Firstly, I had booked a double room with double bed (this was stipulated on the booking) but we actually had twin beds. Having peeked into other rooms I think this is the case for all rooms. Secondly, as others have mentioned the hotel was initially fairly hard to find as it is on the second floor of a private residence that is accessed via a gated walkway off the main street. Thirdly, I was falsely accused of singeing my pillowcase on check out, which left a bit of a bad taste in my mouth so I would advise people to report any faults with your room as soon as you spot them.
