This tourist attraction is a ‘must see’ if you are visiting Slovenia – it is spectacular. The karst cave system is around 24km long with 5km open to the public. (Slovenia has about 10,000 karst caves but Postojna is the largest.) Graffiti inside the cave dates back to 1213 and the cave first became a tourist destination in 1819. In 1872 rails were laid and the first train introduced for tourists; electric lighting was added in 1884. The train took us about 3km into the cave and then we walked along paved pathways weaving our way through caverns and beautiful limestone formations. We eventually ended up at another railway stop where another train took us to the end of the tour. All in all about 3½ hours. Don’t miss this attraction if you are visiting Slovenia, you won’t be disappointed.
