I have been here twice - once when Max was fast asleep drunk on the restaurant floor and once when he was sober. The first occasion was a disaster and meant that there was no breakfast - the second time (at his invitation to show he could do better) was a more pleasant time. The hotel is small and the narrow steep stairs not suitable for anyone with limited mobility. Rooms vary in size and all are reasonaly cleaned (if Max is sober). However, they all look out onto the street and the church bell rings every 15 minutes - day and night - earplugs essential !! Breakfast is fine (if it happens) and Max can come across a little rough and ready unless you speak Slovenian when you can understand his charm. The hostel is expensive for what it is.

The hotel is multiple stories, with 2 rooms on each story, and the stairs are really narrow. When we showed up in the late afternoon, the hotel was closed, so we came back later. Max is really friendly, and he's a partier. He might be too much of a character for some people, but I found him to be pretty funny and he was extremely talkative.
Max told us to come back later so he could clean up the room for us because there was a big party the day before and he didn't have time to clean up. When we came back, the room was really clean. We had a view of the clock tower, and it was about ear level, and one block away, so it was really loud. Luckily we could close the window and not be too hot. That and with earplugs, we were fine. But a young couple left early because it was too loud for them. We sat one morning with the other guests for about 45 minutes before Max showed up with our breakfast. He was very apologetic and upset with himself. I don't know if he was out partying late or what.

Rather mixed review of our stay at Hotel Max I’m afraid.
As others have already written Hotel Max is a brilliantly located, charming small hotel in the wonderful old town of Piran. The hotel, & our room, called Maria, (charmingly no numbers used,) was spotlessly clean and with real character. And had a freestanding fan which was a God-send in the heat wave that hit during our stay (15-18 Aug 2009) The shower room was clean but I’m afraid the shower cubical could do with some work (the mastic sealant was quite mouldy) However we had to remember that this hotel was a “bargain” even with Sterling being so weak against the Euro.

However – Max is, as others have reported a real “character” – seems the spirit is willing but the flesh is weak I’m afraid!!
Max was asleep when we arrived at 4pm (he seemed to think it was 7am) Room wasn’t ready so he left and returned at 6pm, when thankfully it was ready. I had emailed to ask when we could get our room, and Max replied but didn’t actually answer my question.
At breakfast the next morning we had to almost drag Max from the front door step to get our breakfast, and even then he got us mixed up with another couple who came down while were sitting waiting and served them first so I had to draw his attention to the fact we were still waiting for our breakfast. He couldn’t apologize enough, and said he hadn’t slept well the night before, so was a little distracted. He was pleasant enough & very apologetic. Breakfast was plentiful and nice, with very good coffee. The next two days ran much more smoothly and we enjoyed our breakfasts, but with two “issues” so early on in a stay it does leave you a little defensive I’m afraid.

Parking in Piran was also a bit of a pain for us. We were aware that it would cost €12 per day (it is broken down into hourly rate for part days) to park in the multistory car park as parking on roads is a finable offence, but we hadn’t realized it was a “bank holiday” type weekend when we arrived and was very busy, so getting into the car park meant a 2 hour wait. No one else has commented about parking so we assume this was just because of the bank holiday.

We stayed 4 nights and Max left us waiting outside for over an hour due to his hangover and although we got a lovely breakfast each morning, we never had our rooms cleaned properly or towels changed during our stay. The place is lovely - great building and lots of charm, but Max is not personally in a good place right now and drinks most of the day and night away! It's a shame because he's a nice guy underneath if you can delve that far down. Piran itself is breathtaking and quaint and oldy worldy....

Hotel Max was great value for Europe, only 6 rooms and you never heard other people too much, just coming up the stairs. Max was very nice and runs a clean nice establishment. Beds were comfy and it is close to everything but far enough away to be quiet. One warning, you do hear the churchbells ring every 15 minutes but when you are tired they don't wake you up. Also if you drive watch out on busy weekends, you may not get into the garage.

We had a disappointing experience at Hotel Max. We arrived around 12.30pm and buzzed to be let in (as we could see that siesta time wasn't due to start until 1pm). After two attempts to confirm that we had a reservation we were finally let in. We presumed that the person who 'greeted' us was Max but he seemed a bit worse for wear and it took him a while to acknowledge that we did have a booking. He said that the room wasn't ready so we left our bags, as we were more than happy to spend a few hours getting to know Piran, which is a beautiful town. Our room was ready on our return. We were very pleased with the standard. Although it was small it was well equipped and very nicely decorated. Unfortunately the lack of air-conditioning was a problem for us. The room was stiflingly hot and because of this we didn't sleep well so the bell in the clock tower opposite (which rang every 15 minutes), the scooters zooming by and the constant stream of people coming in and out of the hotel kept us awake the whole night. When we got up the next morning there was no-one around and therefore no breakfast.

With the poor welcome, sleepless night, and then no breakfast, we decided to move hotels. We managed to find somewhere on the square and came back to check out. We were told that Max had had an accident the night before which was why there was no-one around that morning. We felt a bit bad about leaving early but we just couldn't face another sleepless night.

To be fair, it is a decent hotel with nice decor and lots of character. If you're a light sleeper the noises from the bell and scooters might disturb you, but during cooler weather with the windows closed it might not be a problem. Regarding Max, maybe we caught him on a bad day.

Lovely hotel in lovely town. Only downsides are lack of air-conditioning so that you have to leave your window open, and it can be quite noisy on the streets at night (you wouldn't say, because it's a rather small street, but it is). Stayed for 3 nights, had a pleasant stay, I'd definitely recommend it!
