“Cosy and Convenient”
Reviewed May 24, 2009

If you are looking for a B & B with an ever-present host and 5 star trimmings forget about the Petra Varl B &B in Ljubliana.

But if you are happy with a clean, modestly-appointed, brilliantly-located, moderately priced (about E 60pn) and very comfortable place to stay for a few days you'll be very happy.

Breakfast provisions are basic but adequate, and there is a small bread/grocery shop adjacent. For a larger shop (with cheap wines) cross over the nearby Dragon Bridge and walk for about 100m on the LHS.

The B &B has three or so rooms (all upstairs on the first floor - no elevator) and at least one has a balcony which opens out onto a courtyard. It's a bit tricky to find - through an archway opposite the statue on the Vodnikov street side of the market place/square.

As traffic movement is restricted near the B & B, If you are being delivered by car or taxi ask them to get you to Krekov Ter (Square). The B & B is only 200m or so from there, and there is a very good tourst information office just opposite. Most of the old-town areas of interest are very close by

The extensive and colourful market sets up in the Square opposite every day. Be sure also to check out the food outlets in the loggia areas on the market edge and the cheese, fish and meat stalls located in the extensive basement under the nearby Catholic church.

You may or may not meet Petra, the artiste-owner. But a family member will be around to meet you and to take your payment.

If you plan to go to Lake Bled (a must!!) take the bus which leaves from the bus station (opposite the railway station) about a ten minute walk away.Tickets are inexpensive and the bus provides a much better service, and more interesting trip than the train. Also the bus drops you very close to the lake and Bled town centre. The bus trip takes about an hour at a cost of E7

Ljubljana is a great town to visit and the Petra Varl B & B provides an excellent base to explore it!!

Firstly i will say that Ljubljana was such a beautiful place to visit. When we got there around 10pm the taxi driver was a little lost so he called Petra who guided him. He then got out of the cab and walked us to the door to make sure we were in right place. Once we were inside Petra welcomed us and even greeted us with a sweet. For breakfast she provided us with muesli, fruit and milk. We felt so at home and welcome. The room was like a studio with a bathroom, a little kitchenette and a balcony. In the morning all we had to do is walk out and the markets were straight in front of us along with the three bridges. Ljubljana and Petra's service made a great impression and i would go back in a heart beat.

We made our reservations by contacting the B&B directly at [-] and had no problems making the reservation or having it kept. Because you don't have to pay for the room up front, you do have to reconfirm your reservation several times. We drove to the B&B and had some difficulties finding it as it is actually on the main street across from the market, not its own street as publicly addressed; this caused us to drive in circles a couple times (even after calling to ask where to go). You have to park on the main street, there is no private parking and because Ljubljana is a major walking area, you have to pay to park. We were lucky enough to leave on a Sunday so parking for us was free. The owner was very nice and spoke excellent English when we checked in and we didn't see or hear from her the rest of the time we were there (a Friday and Saturday night). The B&B is in an awesome location, pretty much central to all of Ljubljana. Everything is within walking distance (the city itself is relatively small). Petra Varl calls itself a Bed and Breakfast, but it's more like a really small apartment. It's one room with an attached bathroom; there is a small balcony as well. The "kitchen" is more like a wardrobe with a very small sink and tiny refrigerator. It comes equipped with a hot water boiler to make Nescafe and a toaster. The mini refrigerator was stocked with apples, bread, milk, orange juice, milk, and jam/butter. Although the room is small, the bed was pretty big and comfortable. There's a tiny table and two chairs pushed up against the wall across from the bed to eat your "breakfast" at. The bathroom was really small too. Everything was clean when we arrived. We ran into an ant problem though. Friday night we arrived really late so we were just excited to go to bed. When I woke up in the morning I noticed a couple of ants, but didn't think anything of it. Later Saturday afternoon we came back and the couple of ants had turned in to about a few dozen. Unsure of what to do, I looked under the sink to maybe get them with some cleaner and found a bottle of ant killer. We sprayed and the problem went away; we didn't see any more ants during our duration. Overall, it was a pretty good stay. I was expecting more with the other reviews given, but was otherwise content with our choice.

We stayed two nights at this "B & B". In retrospect, I wouldn't exactly call it a "B&B" as we know them in the UK or US. It was more like a pension with complementary bread, jam, and fruit in a mini-fridge to snack on. The room was very clean and the hostess (Petra) was very nice. Petra Varsi is rated as 2 stars on its front door which is a fair rating. The room is pretty small but it's tidy. We stayed in the off season for 60 euro/night, which I believe was priced fairly. There were really no frills to this place but it was well located right by the open-air market and a quick walk to downtown Ljubljana. If you are there in the off season, there are some other 4 star hotels with more frills ( including free buffet breakfast) where some people we met stayed and they paid 102/night (at the Grand Union Business hotel). That was a good deal also. As soon as they got off the train they walked around and saw that hotel, went to the front desk, and the 102 euro/night is what was quoted to them. If you don't care about frills or free buffet breakfast, then you might as well save some money and stay at the Petra Varsi.

We stayed at Petra Varl for two nights. The room was great--DVDs, hot tea, nice decor. The location and price cannot be beat!!

Word to the wise!! Do not be late to check in!! Our train from Rijeka, Croatia to Ljubliana was a couple of hours late and we had no way to contact the owners at Petra Varl. By the time we reached the place, the host had already re-booked our reservation and we had to plead with them to let us stay!

They had checked when our train arrived in Ljubliana and because we were not there within an hour of our train arrival, they decided to rebook our room!

My husband & I have just spent three nights at this great B&B
The property is located right in the centre of Ljubljana, and the room was spotlessly clean.
Petra & her partner are most helpful (booking taxis, restaurant reviews etc)
Overall, a great value accomodation.

My friend and I just got back from Ljubljana last night and we stayed at Petra Varl B&B for 2 nights. The location could not be better, the room was cosy but spotlessly clean, and the rate was fantastic value at €55/night.

The only downside was out of the B&B's control. One of the neighbours in the courtyard was having renovations done and scaffolding was being erected from 06:30AM on Saturday and 08:30AM on Sunday!! Despite double glazing on the windows, it was a rather rude awakening. My friend was not disturbed as she had the foresight to bring along ear plugs.

Other than that, I could not recommend Petra Varl any higher. Petra and her partner (Alex) were just lovely and we enjoyed our stay.
