We have just got back from spending the weekend at the city hotel. I did a block booking for 16 family and friends. The hotel service and staff were excellent, the rooms were excellent (really modern with comfy beds and great bathrooms, especially the showers), location is perfect (couple of minutes to the centre), it is easy to find (sign posted off the main street), breakfast is great. I would return to this hotel without hesitation and would recommended this hotel to all types of traveller.

Stayed at the City Hotel last week, and throughly enjoyed it - rooms were clean, comfy and well sized. Breakfast was buffet style - there was a good selection (pickled chili at 0830? Rude not to!) of hot and cold food and everything was well stocked and fresh.

Staff were all really friendly and spoke good English (a big bonus, as my Slovenien is pretty much limited to pivo and hvalla).

Location wise it was about a five minute walk into the centre of the old town, and about the same to the station. But trumping those is the 24 hour kebab shop at the bottom of the street. I seriously thought about bringing one back to show takeaways round here what one should taste like!

The City Hotel in Ljubljana offers very friendly customer service. Even if the language barrier proves somewhat difficult (which didn't happen often). The hotel is very well organized and offers a lot of free service like bikes, umbrellas and an internet cafe.
Breakfast was included in the price of the basic room and was huge. I had never seen something like it. Because I had to leave very early to catch a bus to the next city I was unable to have breakfast in the hotel. When checking out, breakfast to go had been prepared for me as promised and it was very good.

It only takes a 5 minute walk to reach the main train/bus station, the old city center and the newer parts of the city are nearby as well. The only negative thing worth mentioning is the fact that the room (basic) did not have air conditioning rendering it difficult to fall asleep because of the heat.

Upon arrival, the hotel staff was cold. We paid $200 for a triple room during high season, and they first put us in a room with no air conditioning! When we turned on the fan dead flies flew all over the beds! We were disgusted and called the front desk to complain when they gave us a different room, clean, with air conditioning and very comfortable beds. We decided to have dinner at the hotel since it was late and our children were tired, and we were pleasantly surprised by very friendly waitstaff, lovely outdoor terrace and very good food and wine. Overall I was not impressed by the hotel but enjoyed our dining experience.

Room Tip: Confirm ahead of time your room has air conditioning if staying here in the summer

This was a great 3 star hotel and it is in a fabulous location.

It is in a safe area and only a 5 minute walk to the centre of the old town. The hotel has really good safety, particularly for females in that you have a security card to get to the bedroom floors but each card will only take you to the floor that your room is on.

The rooms are not huge but were very clean with a large bed (no bed bugs in sight - a few people have said they woke up with a bite but that may just be an insect bite and we certainly had no problems at all). We were in room 204 and it was very quiet

We only ate breakfast at the hotel but there was a wide choice including cereals, fresh fruit, yoghurts, breads, meats and cheeses, cooked breakfast, cakes and pancakes.

The reception staff were very helpful although not very smiley.

Ljubljana is a beautiful city and I definitely recommend a guided tour of the castle - our guide Elenka was amazingly informative. It is lovely walking along the river at night stopping for drinks or ice creams or crepes etc. There was also lots of music playing in the street as it was the Ljubljana festival. We loved this city but I would say three nights is sufficient as it is quite a small city.

For the rate paid, $150 Euros, plus parking, this hotel was not great. From the surly, perfunctory greeting, ( I'm sorry, this is not PC, but the Russians are gone, Eastern Europeans in the hospitality business need to learn some customer relation skills). The rooms are very basic with no, repeat no, amenities. (Be sure to bring your own shampoo, etc.) Decor is early dorm style, IKEA, no charm, whatsoever. Shower had mildew. If it's summer, be sure to ask for AC, not all rooms have it, and you will pay more. Could not call another family member's room, when we inquired, were told, must be something wrong with your phone, no attempt to correct problem. Key security for elevator, prevents you from going to other floors, really annoying, if you have family or friends staying in another room. WiFi was iffy at best. Breakfast buffet was more than adequate, lots of choices. Lubjljana is a beautiful city, definitely worth a visit, but stay somewhere else.

Room Tip: Ask for AC when you reserve.

There is nothing bad to say about this hotel. The reason to go for this hotel is location as ultimately this is a business hotel. The rooms were perfectly adequate and you got a decent breakfast for your money. The staff are very friendly and were helpful on our day trips (without overly pushing the partner tours - always a bonus).

Ljubljana is a small city and it helps to have a central location to the bridges and the restaurants bars etc. It is also a short walk from the train and bus station for arrival/departure and trips to the caves/Lake Bled. I strongly recommend you take the time to go to Lake Bled - it is the highlight of a trip to Slovenia.

Odd "english supporters" pub opposite but generally the area feels very safe.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
City Hotel is located in the very heart of Ljubljana and is an excellent choice for both business guests and tourists to discover the charms of Ljubljana and Slovenia. It has a wonderful view of Ljubljana Castle and the city cathedral, and an ideal location just a stone’s throw from the historic old town. This pleasant hotel among the vibrant city inns, shops, and attractive historical buildings offers local Slovenian and international cuisine as well as a state-of-the-art congress center. The Jože Pučnik international airport is only 25 km from the hotel, and the main railway and bus station is only 400 m away. The hotel is easy to access from all of the city’s major roads; once in the city, you simply follow the blue hotel signs. Ljubljana’s City Hotel is the successor to the venerable Štrukelj Hotel, which opened in 1907. The current hotel excels in its friendly staff, the warmth of its rooms, and a broad range of services found at an excellent location in the very city center. City Hotel has 201 rooms, three luxury suites, an underground garage, a conference center with four meeting rooms, a library, a terrace, an Internet corner, a restaurant, and a bar. City Hotel’s complete makeover concluded with its opening in September 2007. The “basic” and “standard” rooms were renovated, and the “superior” rooms were moved to a completely new part of the hotel. All of the rooms use a card-locking system and all of them have free Internet access. ... more   less
