“A nice concept, but wouldn't stay again”
Reviewed August 14, 2013

Fantastic use of an old building but, although some of the art was interesting, it didnt make up for the dirty rooms, filthy communal wash areas, terrible showers and expensive beer! A bit of a hostel atmosphere at night but don't hold your breath.
A novelty, which quickly wears off!

Room Tip: If you have any type of disability check that your room does not have ladders to your bed.

The good:
The hostel is extremely close to the main station, with access to buses that can take you almost anywhere and the city centre is a short walk away.
The hostel is clean, and has an interesting Chinese tea room in which you can sit, relax and play boardgames that are available to borrow from the front desk.
With its polished corridors, and plush foyer, it feels very much like a hotel.
The bad:
The hostel was once a prison (one of its supposedly attractive features) with cells available to stay in. The rooms, being cells, are very small with a sort of reverse bunk bed that hangs above the door/gate and requires you to scale a ladder. There is little room to maneuver or fit the bed sheets which you are expected to do yourself. In addition with only a small warn out fan in each room, it gets extremely hot and though there is a window, with the huge number of insects in the summer, a boiler room is still preferable to an insect room.
The ugly:
On the rooftop of the neighbouring building there are a large number of manequins in various poses (labelled art) which have the haunting affect of looking like ghostly spectres during the evenings. This in combination with the floor based installation art (hard to describe, but imagine wailing figures under your feet) make for a horrifying sleeping experience.
We also had a camera stolen whilst down in the foyer and though this is not directly the fault of the hostel, their public bar and restaurant are, in my opinion, partly to blame for the loss. (Admittedly the staff did try to help. I wouldn't say they did their best to help, but they did show a little effort).

It should be noted that we stayed in a two person room and I cannot, therefore, speak of the dorms.

I would say that this hostel makes for an unforgettable experience, but having been there once I would not return in a hurry.

Thank you for your thorough and sincere review about your stay at Celica.

We appreciate what you classified as »good«. Regarding the neighbourhood area with the manequins, which you obviously seem to dislike, it should be pointed out that it is an artistic-bohemian area of Ljubljana, full of unusual cafes, concert clubs, art galleries and even little theatres. A great deal of Celica guest often emphasize that such surrounding environment gives the hostel an additional value and completes the unusual hostel character .

Furthermore, the 119 cell you stayed in is a piece of art as the rest of the 19 other hostel cells that have been artistically redesigned from prison cells into funky rooms. Each cell's concept and appearance is the author's idea and work so unfortunately, there's little use in explaining what should be categorized as nice or ugly People just have different tastes. And which is of course a good thing.

And finally, we are very sorry about the camera loss. But even more to hear you blaming the bar & restaurant staff for it. Since they are occupied with serving drinks, food and entertainig guests, they cannot be responsible for people's personal belongings, too. On the other hand, if such unpleasant events occur, the staff does everything in their power to help, including contacting the police if necessary in order to do as mush as possible, but unfortunately it is often of little use after objects disappear.

Once again, we appreciate your honesty in the review and would definitely preferred to see your experience would have turned out more positively.

Always welcome to stay again.

The hostel is near the train station and some way from the town centre. Whilst converted jails can make excellent hostels - I recommend the ones in Stockholm and Prague - this one is in the middle of an area full of loud gatherings at all hours of the night; also there is no air-conditioning. So be aware that you're staying in the equivalent of Christiania: if you like graffiti art, public sculpture, and playing the guitar until the dawn, this is the place for you! If not, not.

Unfortunately, I thought the novelty of staying in a converted jail was let down and needs improvement to justify the price. I want to be clear that the location is great and the hostel is very clean and well kitted out but it is overpriced for the service and facilities. I would also say that during our stay it was noisy outside for a lot of the night and I found the cell beds to be difficult to get in and out of, even unsafe.

Thank you for your sincere thoughts. We're sorry to hear your stay did not turned out as you have expected.

Hostel Celica may rank a bit higher than other Ljubljana hostels when talking about price due to its unusual character and design. The historical value of the building and the artwork in each of the former cells as well as in other corners around the building, simply cannot be compared to a standard accommodation facility. Sleeping at Celica is somehow considered spending the night in an art gallery. Regarding the room architecture, it is pretty much the same. Each cell's concept and design was left to artists exclusively. And when it comes to art, it is impossible to equally fulfill every person's tastes.

Welcome to stop by again and experience Celica from a different cell / perspective.

The hostel Celica is ideally located only a few minutes away (by walking) from the train station or from the old town center.

Once arriving nearby, you might be surprised or even a bit worried by the neighbourhood: around the hostel, all the buildings are tagged by crazy artists, and very weird statues or pieces of art are standing all over this unique place. Don't be afraid, you're in good hands!!!

The personel of the Celica is young, very friendly and helpful. Once there, I enrolled for a tour with the "roundabout" company. Since we were not enough, the tour should have been cancelled. However, they did their best to find a convenient solution for me, so that I could still travel a bit around Slovenia. Just great!!!

Regarding the hostel itself, I did not have that much time to enjoy the commune areas. I stayed in a 12 bed dormitory. Unfortunately, you could not really feel there that your were sleeping in a former prison. It was just a large room below the roof, with mattrasses laying very close to each other, and quite close to the floor. At first sight, not very comfortable, but I must say I surprisingly slept well there. The room had air-co, and all my room-mates were very respectful of the others, so no noise at all. We also had 2 privates showers and toilets. However, if you're tall, maybe not the best option for you, since mattrasses are quite small, and some are standing vey close to the tilted and low roof!

The breakfast itself was the best I ever had anywhere in an hostel (except maybe in Krakow). Bread, warm drinks, juices, eggs, saussages, and even a big cake!

This hostel also has a great bar, and you can have lunch or dinner here (large menu available).

The Celica is not particularly cheap even for a dormitory, but it's still a nice and very clean place, in an ideal location. When booking, maybe check if you can have one of the old rooms of the former jail, since it might make your stay there even more unique.

Hi, thank you very much for sharing your thoughts. We appreciate it a lot. The staff are doing our best to make people at the hostel feel OK because we all do love what we do. And you're right, Celica does not attract only young travelers but of different ages because of its unsual and aunique character. And that's really nice to see people of different walks of life meeting and mingling at the hostel.

We're glad you enjoyed your stay and pay us a visit next time you are in Ljubljana again.

It is 3:39 on a Tuesday morning and I have been awake since 3:00 when a party started next door. I don't mean people laughing and chatting, I mean a full out party complete with lots of bass and drumming. While ear plugs and noise apps can block out people, NOTHING can stop this degree of noise. Reception said there is nothing they can do about it and I'm lucky it's not a Friday because they go until 6:00. If you want to sleep do not stay here, it;s loud, they know it, and do not seem to care. It's part of being on this part of town apparently. Since I'm here complaining---I can add that the bathrooms smell and have obviously not been cleaned in a while. The toilet brushes have green and brown slime on them. The rooms are a nice concept and the hostel itself is relatively quiet, I just had to let people know about the noise so you don't make the same mistake I did. Don't know how I'm going to make it over Triglav pass tomorrow on 3 hours sleep!

Hello,
we are sorry to hear such comments and do sincerely apologize for not delivering a satisfactory service, but I can assure you, we do care and are not willing to ignore the situation.

Unfortunately, it was not just a lame excuse that we can do little about the noise coming from the neighbouring area. The hostel is located in the alternative zone of Metelkova City and it's a very popular area among the Ljubljana population and other visitors. Since we are not the owners of the area, we are unable to shut the noise down. Especially in summer, people like to hang out outside which makes everything louder, unfortunately. On the other hand, a great share of the hostel guests is delighted about the hostel's locations and are just enthusiastic about having the Metelkova area just around the corner.

But what we can do is take full responsibility in what's going on in the hostel itself. And cleanliness is one of the most important issues that should bet aken care of on regular basis and at the highest level possible. We sincerely apologize for not meeting your expectations and the matter sure deserves to be checked into details with our cleaning & maintenance staff.

Always welcome to stay at Celica again.

Kind regards,

This hostel is in a great location, close to the train station and the city centre. We enjoyed the concept, and the hostel's themed communal areas proved to be good places to hide from the sun, with a cool drink from the bar, during the middle of the day. The bar serves a good range of food all day, and the buffet breakfast is plentiful. The hostel organises several events on different nights of the week - something to be aware of is that these tend to go on quite late (1am some nights), so it can be noisy.
