Ljubljanski Grad is organized as a good tourist machine. It is not bad for a first visit in Ljubljana or for all curious people who want to visit an exhibition or two. Other visitors can choose one of the paths to get to the top of the hill or even join the tourist train (works during the summer season). For older people and groups a glass funicular is very convenient– you can buy a return ticket. It is recommended to invest to a ticket with all entrances: to the big tower with bellevue on the top and to the permanent exhibition about history in Slovenia and Ljubljana. This spring they also give you opportunity to visit exhibition about five castles in Slovenia, from Bogenšperk to Otočec. Without entrance ticket you can enter to the chapel and climb to the lower terrace. There are several possibilities to order your drink, other refreshment or even good lunch. Prices for meals are not low but quality has special price.

We played the game of Escape the Castle and we had a lot of fun. It was harder than we had expected and it took us a couple of tries to complete the challenge. We really enjoyed our visit.

The Ljubljana fort offers not much in museum quality pieces. But it is an interesting site to look at how European forts and castles were built. The view from its walls and tower are excellent 360 degrees around. The funicular going up and down could be crowded. If you have time, take the walkways up and down.

If you’re expecting a “British Castle”, you’ll be disappointed. There isn’t actually much of the structure to see or history to learn about. The castle has been converted into civic and entertainment spaces, to the detriment of a typical castle experience. It’s all a bit odd. It’s still worth spending an hour or two though.

Most of the interior of the castle is new due to a fire but the outer walls are older and the views of the city and surrounding mountains from the tower are great. It is a nice, slightly strenuous hike up the hill or you can take the funicular. The path up the hill is well shaded. If you take the funicular up it is a pretty easy hike down. The castle is well worth a visit.
