Owner description: A mighty medieval fortress, a symbol of the Slovenian capital Ljubljana is an interesting tourist point, the idyllic grounds for long strolls just a glance away from the lively city centre. The Ljubljana castle offers many cultural, historic and entertaining events throughout the year.

The castle shows great views over Ljubljana. You can see as far as Austria! The castle isn't great, and you aren't able to see much of it. But it is worth it simply for the views.

The primary value to us was the view of the city. A ticket includes a roundtrip ride on the funicular, which is interesting. The castle is relatively mundane compared to others throughout Europe.

We took the funicular up to the castle and climbed the castle tower. The view is well worth the climb. The castle area is large with a couple places to eat or just sit and enjoy some icecream. There are little nooks and crannies that have some displays you can review - like how this castle held prisoners of war in WWI. Very interesting and something to see while you are visiting this gorgeous capital.

Let me just say this: just about the only good thing about this castle is the view of Ljubljana and its surroundings. During the restoration in the 80's they managed to make it unimportant and historically irrelevant. Such a shame - the castle hill was inhabited since the neolithic era, the Romans established a post there, the medieval castle has been there forever ... But you won't get a feeling for any of these things. Just another tourist attraction.

We purchased the ticket that included the funicular ride, the virtual castle movie, the museum entrance fee and to be able to ascend the tower. The views were outstanding and the museum was extremely informative. The square (which is not square), a couple of restaurants, a few performing musicians, and a beautiful day caused us to choose to spend several hours here. We were not disappointed.
