“Great views from the tower”
Reviewed March 12, 2013

Get the funicular up to the castle and enjoy the view from the top of the tower. Lots of history to read about as the castle was used as a prison for POWs as well as a residence. The castle looks quite big from the river but is quite small once you get there. There is a lovely chapel but the frescoes have been refurbished in the 90s and look a bit garish but it's worth going.

“Take the lift up it is a long walk”
Reviewed March 10, 2013

Great restoration, very professional tours and a wonderful view. I liked it! You do realize that 50 characters are not always needed to make a point.

“Great views of the city”
Reviewed March 10, 2013

We took the funicular up to the top, for the thrill of it, as the castle is not a long way to walk up to. About 10-15 minutes max.
Arriving at the top revealed a breathtaking view of Ljubljana and it's skyline which had a weird triangle shaped building in it. I'll be sure to find out what the building is for, and inform you.
Anyways, from the funicular you enter a dark cave with lots of corridors taking you to different parts of the castle which has galleries, museums and even a restaurant that looked amazing, but we did not stay for a meal there, as it was not in our itinerary. The main point of the castle is a large tower that gives a great view of the city, but at this time everything was closed for construction, so after a brief stroll we went on our way. Even though we could not enjoy the whole tour, it struck me as something that is very nice when you can go around all of the exhibits, virtual walks and the seeing tower. The price of the whole shabang with a return funicular ride is 8 euros per person, and offering the entry to the galleries, seeing tower and the museum and the mentioned funicular ride, it gives you a great way to spend a few hours, and learn a bit about the history of the place.
Be sure to check with the attendant at the funicular in the town if the castle and it's attractions are functioning.

“For good views of the city”
Reviewed March 8, 2013 via mobile

Open from 10am - 6pm
€6 entry without funicular
Which was down for maintenance but we had a car so just drove up ourselves. This has great views of the city (on a clear day) from the top tower. We watched a short video about the history of the castle and the significance of the dragon. There isn't much else to see in the castle which is rather modern vs. most other european castles. Parking is free if you do decide to drive up.

“Unexpected and wonderful...”
Reviewed March 2, 2013

I had thought I'd trudge to the top of the hill, have a look at some ruins and walk back down. But no. It's beautiful up there -- a terrific museum with all sorts of artifacts and stories about the castle, a lot of touchscreen technology which is super fun, maps, narratives, interactive exhibits. The viewing tower offers a great view of the whole valley. In the courtyard is a very sweet coffee spot and restaurant for putting your feet up after exploring the castle. And there is a lot to explore, from dungeons to great rooms, to long walkways across the top of the rampart. highly recommend. Everyone speaks English fluently, German as well. Don't miss it.
